Thanks for all this organizing!! I'd love to say "hi" to my fellow BYCers, but I also don't want to stress out you, the other organizers, or myself. Maybe you can "call a coffee break" in the center of the space just before the doors open, and give whatever last minute instructions are needed, and we can at least say hi to each other. It'll be nice to be able to store food in a kitchen area... maybe there are volunteers who would lay out "potluck dishes" about 11:45, and let people come get "take out" until about 1:30... a "walking potluck" as it were... just an idea. But I'd be just as happy with no potluck, simply because it will most likely be too frantic to enjoy it anyway. And with my food allergies, I end up not being able to eat much of it... if at all possible, I will make sample cookies (they'll have some of my jam on them) and you can come by and have one.... but Life is so busy, I won't guarantee that!

Congrats on the Seramas!!

I am looking for coturnix quail. I will be driving two hours and am a little nervous I wont find much. Do they generally have quail at this event? Is the selection worth my drive?
Thanks

Sorry if my message came across stressed. Hatching issues, being up all night and typing do not seem to go well together. I won't stress about it...lol I will just let you guys figure out what you want to do! I'm good with whatever is decided and of course will provide something. I think that is a great idea about meeting up before and saying hi. It always seems to get so crazy and I miss out on seeing people or spending time talking. I will be there at 8am to set up so the doors will be open. I will run back home and get my stuff since I only live 5 minutes away but this will give everyone time to come early and be ready. I don't think we want to be setting up just before the swap officially starts like in the past (yes, lol I'm always the one doing that). Alexis, are we going to have 4H volunteers for stuff?

And thank you

I lost one of the smallest babies overnight, but it happens. I hate it, but I expect it now so I don't get too worked up about it. Sorry if that sounds awful, just goes with hatching I've learned. I'm surprised any of them hatched anyway. The humidity issues were awful this time around. Plus the shipped eggs had bad air cells, so out of 38 eggs, I only got 15 - 7 of them were mine. The one that hatched and died came from a very wonky air sac so I'm not really too surprised it didn't make it. I am thrilled with my 8 babies, one of them my first silkied from my pen

A couple of things worry me about the potluck. Everyone being away from their tables at the same time. Very risky. I like the idea of a sort of available lunch buffet to stroll through and grab something, but not everyone at once.

Maybe the kitchen can be posted "private area" or "Members only". We probably can't afford to feed everyone who shows up and I don't like to eat food prepared by total strangers. I don't consider members of this group to be strangers, but drop-ins could be anybody, including wackadoodle humaniacs with an agenda. I don't want to eat any food they bring.

I figure I'll take a lot of something finger food-ish and anyone from Backyard Chickens that comes by to chat can have some. So maybe the strolling potluck could be table to table as we go around to see what everyone is selling.

Cathy and I will be sharing a table again so that we can take turns shopping. Although that means we could easily take turns at the potluck table if it isn't intended to for everyone to eat at the same time. That means no fun and games at the buffet table while half the people are missing out.

I'm agreeable with whatever the rest of you decide. I can always eat, but don't want to leave my stuff unattended if there are large numbers of the general public about.

Just let me know when ya all are gonna be takin a break to eat !!! That is when I will show up TO DO MY SHOPPING!!!!

OK serious here is another idea. Since you are all "friends" what about the hog trough no no no I mean buffet in a somewhat secure area and then look out for each others sale areas while a neighbor or 2 go get food. I have even done this at swaps where I didn't know my neighbor until we set up next tto each other. But then I guess that's just the way us hix from the styx are, too trusting.

As I said, I'm fine with anything you decide but we need to keep the food in the kitchen area I feel...the potluck stuff. Sample type things of what you are selling is fine, but if we have it out at our tables, the public is going to eat it. Nutcakes will be there selling snack stuff for them to buy and eat while they browse and I'm not really sure it would be fair to them if we are sharing free food with the public, so I think all our stuff should be in the kitchen are and for vendors only. Shouldn't be hard to keep it private since it is behind doors and not in the main area at all.

I personally haven't seen quail at these swaps before, BUT that doesn't mean they weren't there, or could've been brought if someone knew that there were people looking for them. If you post exactly what you are looking for (quantity, colors, etc) Laura can add it to the have / want list, and then if someone has what you are looking for, they can contact you, or at least make sure they bring some quail. Regardless, I guarantee the day will be worth the drive.

Yeah, that's generally how it ends up working. This one's just gonna be SO much bigger than any we've done in the past. Literally EVERY swap we've done has been at least twice the size of the one before it....

I need to ask a favor.

If someone close to Corvallis will just keep an eye on pumpkin prices for me and tell me the cheapest place on Swap day, I'd appreciate it.

I generally buy a couple hundred pounds of pumpkin at Halloween, and last year the cheapest over here were 38 cents a pound. I can't pay that much. I use them for animal feed.

Anyway, if there are cheap pumpkins, I'll stop on my way home and load up my van with pumpkins. My ducks and dogs will appreciate your input.

Thanks

OK....here's my official vote...I say we bag the potluck altogether. The one in the spring didn't happen at all because of how big the whole thing was (way bigger than any of us expected) so all the food prep was essentially a waste of time for everyone who worked so hard to bring something shareable.

This swap is already SO much bigger than anything we've ever done before and there's still a month left, which is usually when people start coming out of the woodwork. I just don't see how a potluck is going to happen. I know I for one won't have time to leave my table, between my own stuff I'm selling, the raffle, and having the greeter / info table...yeah, there will be no time for going to the "potluck" area...

And if we have stuff at our own tables, we are taking business away from Nutcakes, and they've done a TON of promoting for us...
