Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Does anyone know of a breeder with Buckeyes in OR/WA? We had one buckeye hen, less than one year old, that was attacked and killed by a dog on Easter sunday. My wife doesn't want to do shipped eggs this time and so we are looking for chicks.

That would be great Cloverleaf! I really need to get him a girl as he will be maturing soon and then I will have to put him by himself. He hatched February 27, so 8 weeks old. I think it was just after yours? And yay for more eggs!

I had 3 fertile ones from my new trio and I almost got the incubator out but I stopped myself...and so did the cats by rolling them onto the floor LOL. I took it as a sign - no more hatching!
 
We did not have any birds or eggs reserved. I think we sold over 60-70% to other BYC members, but quiet a bit of our sales were to walk-bys and folks that heard about it on CL. I would think something well known, if not with street view, would be nice for the local people that might attend just off the CL ads. It's a little awkward going out to the country to someone's private property because you heard of a chickenswap (what's a chickenswap?!) out there. Little less strange to stop by the fairgrounds or a park..

It hasn't been decided yet but I've heard more for it than against it. The underlying consensus is to have it there and keep the farms and private locations for our other get togethers. It is going to be over $100 for sure, but as I said, the person organizing it (me) pays up front and then a donation is taken up at the swap with everyone contributing a few bucks. This is how we did it at the last fall swap and it worked great.

Ok, heard back from Nancy and basically ANY building or area at the fairgrounds is ours to rent. For those of you who know the fairgrounds, you know that means we have a LOT to choose from and they are all nice. My recommendation is if we decide this is where we want to be that we stay away from the parking lots for setting up. The parking lots are crazy during the fall with the car sales and the shuttles. There are several buildings available (which would take away any worry about weather) and most of them come with tables as part of the package. There are a couple nice grassy areas too, both near parking lots and with the fairgrounds, you are able to drive your car onto the property to some of these buildings/areas. I'm not worried too much about cost (would like to keep it under $200 if we can) at this point, just finding a place and getting it booked. Below is a list of buildings and/or areas available to us with dates. Let's get some feedback!

My personal recommendations are: 1) Guerber Hall - it's inside and it's the building that people associate with poultry; there are restrooms, heating, big doors, parking outside etc. 2) Oak Grove Lawn - if we want to be outside and risk the weather, this would be a great spot - lots of trees, parking lot area and near restrooms

GUERBER HALL: 60' x 72' x 16', broom finished concrete floor, loading doors,
heating, restrooms, side room with counter space and sink. Rental. Fire Code up to
563. Rental includes 10 tables and 75 chairs.


Very nice area towards the back of the fairgrounds, entrance to the South Parking Lot nearby, little small. Available: 9/3, 9/10, 9/24, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29

FLORAL COURTYARD: 12' x 20' covered stage, 70' x 100' open grass area,
2,400' covered cement walkways. Lighted with electrical hook-ups, water hook-ups,
restrooms, lattice siding, arbor style entrance and planter boxes.


This is at the back of the fairgrounds. Not quite sure where the parking is for this (they usually use the grass field during fair time) but it's quite a roomy area. Available: 9/3, 9/10, 9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29

OUTDOOR ARENA: 200' x 120', rodeo arena, bleacher seating for
approximately 1,500, announcer stand, lighting. Use of rodeo equipment requires
additional payment; please inquire.


I would say any of these except the auditorium lot (always busy and auditorium is always booked) and the South Parking lot would work. The Oak Grove area is adjacent to the campground and right in the heart of the fairgrounds and I've sent an email to confirm the other lawn area locations.

PARKING LOTS / GRASS AREA:
300’ X 900’ = 270,000 sq. ft. or 6 + acers (All gravel lot)
Activities not allowed on lawns include roasting pits, mud bogs and other events
that would damage the lawns.

**Edited to update the grassy areas: For those of you familiar with the fair, the Oak Grove Lawn is where the food court is set up during the fair and where the farmer's market used to be held. The South Lawn is where the rides are at the back of the grounds and near the floral courtyard area. The East Lawn is the main stage area - all of that grass from the street to the internal road system.

Oh, and I think what may have helped sales at canby were 2 things. 1) Easter egg hunt event and 2) They routinely stock canby's 1 acre kid pond with hundreds of trout which brings families with kids.
 
My votes are #1 - the hall, and #2 the floral courtyard. Do we know price differences in the different areas yet?
