Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

Peace Seeds out of Corvallis also has a good selection of heirloom seeds - they sell at the Corvallis Saturday Market, though I don't think they have a website, and Adaptive Seeds http://www.adaptiveseeds.com/ are actually in my hometown of Sweet Home! I tried their Devil's Tongue lettuce and it was very slow to bolt and very delicious! Buy local! :)

Another thing to think about is that heirlooms bred for this area do best unless you're a master gardener. I get my best results with tomatoes like Oregon Spring, Stupice, Early Girl - no matter how much I love beefsteaks, most Oregon areas don't have warm enough nights to get them to grow.

I'm not sure if I'm organized enough to add seeds to what I'm bringing, but I'll keep in mind that some of you are interested, and I'll look through the heirlooms I have (mostly from Seed Savers Exchange, Peace Seeds and Adaptive).

I just harvested all the seed pods from my gorgeous black tulips (Queen of the Night). There are a few red tulips in the area, so there may be cross pollination.

I have no idea how difficult it is to grow tulips from seeds, but the seed pods are perfectly ripe. I'll bring the seeds along if anyone wants to give it a try.

I found that out the hard way, when I first moved out here from the midwest. I never had any problems with my gardens back there. My first summer in Portland, I started a veggie garden right away, planting all my usual favs. Worst garden I ever had! Started out ok, and some of the plants even looked good. Just never really produced anything.

That was along time ago and I can't remember how much I invested, but I got 'one' tomato that year! It was a big joke (for along time) about my very expensive tomato!

I've moved a few times since. I do have enough space where I live now for a garden, I just haven't done so yet, except for a few container gardens. I'm do want a garden this next spring for sure! I even would like a small greenhouse. (but that might not be in the cards for awhile)

Going to post in emergencies as well, but I thought I'd ask you all for help first.
As soon as I got home today I had to check on my brand new BLRW babies. 6 were under their mom doing fine.... one was off, alone, by my little pen about 75' away from the others. it wasn't peeping for help or moving much at the time... something chomped it. Poor little thing has a big bloody dent on each side of its head just behind the eyes. Its a little shaky on its feet (at this age they are all a little wobbly, but this one stumbles too much) and I have only gotten it to open one eye half way in short bits. Right now its napping in the front of my dress because mommy bit at it when we tried to return it and with its trouble walking and closed eyes I knew it wouldn't last long. I have tied to get it to eat some egg yolk (I added water to make a paste) and drink some water. It took a few drops of each and began to fuss and complain more... like a lively healthy chick would if you held it down and smeared its beak with stuff. It is currently trying to escape from my dress and seems to have lots of fight in it. I have a reptile heat pad in a plastic tote for it to sleep in tonight... but tomorrow I have to work and then I am heading up north (4 hour road trip) to spend a busy weekend doing all sorts of non-chick friendly things. I will take it with if its what I have to do to save it, but I fear by the time I get back the mother won't take it back even if I get it rehabilitated. I don't want to take another chick from my hen to keep it company, but I don't want to raise a lonely little chick... I am not even sure what else I can do for a 24 hour old chick who can't see. I think if it makes it through the night it will recover, but I do not really have the ability to keep up a special needs chick. I work in an open office...I can't keep it with me.
Anyone out there have tips? Has anyone else had a chick with a chomped head recover? What do I do?!

Darn. I'm really sorry.

You have to consider that whatever bit it has a filthy dirty mouth. The chance of infection is VERY VERY high. The hen will not take it back after the several days it's going to take to rehab this baby. If it were me, I would cull it now and cut my losses, though I know a lot of people can't do that.

I've got mine all cut, just not done sewing them together. They are going to be SO cute in a quilt - and yes, they are very easy to make. I can't remember if I cut 12 or 16, but it would be easy to do more.

Tamra, lots of chicks are raised in brooders, so I suspect that the best that you can do is to set up a brooder and prepare to hand raise the chick just like you would raise a box of shipped chicks.

The baby will be fine if left in the brooder while you are gone.

The mom isn't going to take it back, so you'll have to raise it and then properly introduce it to the flock when it is old enough.

I can't say whether I would cull or not. It depends upon how bad the injuries are. I would probably cull if it looks like the chick will be blind. A blind chicken has a really tough life. But other than that, chickens can make a recovery from some pretty awful injuries.

It might not be a bite. It might have got it's bitty head stuck in something and gotten injured while pulling it out.

I definitely would. I have some similar and some seeds from a tulip called red riding hood which is super beautiful if you'd like some of those. I was also successful in germinating turmeric this year! Going to try wasabi next!
