Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

ZooMummy...Back to the Serama....(I am still drooling over yours) Do you have any experience with D'anvers? How do they compare to Seramas? Are they alot bigger? Personality. I never thought I'd say it...but by October I just may have some house chickens...lol

Cottagechick - I loooove my d'anvers. My 4 year old carries her hens and the rooster all over our yard and catches them easily. We started them in the house and they had way more personality than the silkies, sexlinks, marans, etc that I raised (or what I remember in my youth). I have my first Serama's and so far am greatly enjoying them. My d'anver's are pretty small but a bit bigger that Serama's. I do have a VERY tame roo (hehe) if you have an interest. I got my daughter to commit to just one of her two roos. IMHO if I had more room we'd go into way more d'anvers. But then I am a chicken addict, so who knows.

I would have to defer to Critters on this one since I do not know a thing about D'anvers. I can only help you in the Serama world

I can tell you that Seramas are bred strictly for temperament so every bird is a "pet". They weigh 1lb or less and you can cage a pair in a 30"x30" cage very comfortably (guinea pig/rabbit cage). They have very long lives and since they are bred to be pets, they love the confinement of a cage. I cannot say that for other bantams I have had as house chickens. My Seramas do not mind cage life at all. That is my input

Mimi and Remington have now been adopted by the blue ribbon winner family over in Bend. They are coming to get them next Friday along with some from the latest hatch. My next set hatches in early September - frizzles, smooth, silkied and hopefully more silkied frizzle. I might fit one more hatch in right away since I really would like all the birds for the swap to be sexed.

HoP, barge right in, we are glad to have you here!

Yes, this swap is the place to do that if you can hang onto the roos that long or you can advertise them here (photos, info etc) and see what happens. You can make a bringing/wanting list if you want and I will put it in the next update for you. This goes not only on the thread, but also on the website. You will definitely be able to find hens at the swap along with a lot of other goodies! I hop we will see you there

FUN! I just went to the website of the swap and I will definitely be there! Thanks..I am getting chicken crazy..I am already dog crazy.
I had my coop built for only four to five hens, so can't go all that crazy.
.although I have been reading the threads on heirlooms and that is what I planted this year and would love to find more. I just ate my first black beauty heirloom today..very sweet. I have Pink Ladies and and plenty of them..

I have a Buff Orpington that is turned out to be a Roo..he has been practicing his call for three days now..
sad.png
so I would like another Buff..
I would keep him, however,
I am just on the edge of city limits, with only one neighbor next to me that likes him and wants me to keep him..so not sure if that counts as illegal,
Then my coop was built for only five to four birds and he sure is big..his head almost grazes the bottom of the coop. (I had it elevated and wire underneath, so they can go under)
and last, he is already picking on my EE hen, kind of being a bit mean.

Then my white Silkie I think (pretty sure is a Roo), so looking for another silkie. My black silkie, I am pretty sure is a hen..very small compared to the white one and the tail feathers are a lot different). He doesn't seem that aggressive but does boss the black one around.

I am new to the chicken thing, but I know I don't want a RIR or the ones that are black and white speckled..(not sure of the name)

Where in Washington?? Vancouver?

Hello! I'm in the same boat. (In Hillsboro too lol) 4 out of my 7 are roos. October seems so far off to get my little flock settled in by winter. I'm not good at waiting though, and I like to plan. The suspense is killing me lol.

Edited to add: I should mention I'm extremely excited about the swap, just really bad at waiting lol. Looking forward to heirloom seeds too.

since your from Hillsboro, can you tell me exactly how many we can own?? I read if you own up to a 1/4 acre you can own up to 9. I own that much land. My back yard is next to a park/trees.

I am still debating keeping the Roo/Roo's, kind of attached to them

I am very close to the Clark County Fairgrounds. I do have a silkie chick in the brooder I could part with if you are setup for young peeps. I have a 4 month old BO that is almost ready to lay that I could part with. I also have different colors of Blue Laced Red Wyandottes hatched in April. The feed store by my house has EE peeps in their brooders as well.

From what I understand the rules changed in December. If your lot is over 7,000 sq ft you can have 3, if you have over 10,000 sq ft you can have 6. Out side of the city limits must not have a limit since I know people with LOTS of chickens. I am so jealous. We figured we would have at least one roo so got 7 hoping to end up with our 6. Now we need 3 more.
