Oregon Fall Poultry Swap - October 22 - Corvallis @ the Fairgrounds!!!

From what I understand the rules changed in December. If your lot is over 7,000 sq ft you can have 3, if you have over 10,000 sq ft you can have 6. Out side of the city limits must not have a limit since I know people with LOTS of chickens. I am so jealous. We figured we would have at least one roo so got 7 hoping to end up with our 6. Now we need 3 more.

Yeah..I want to own a lot too..

I am a pet sitter and have a client who's chickens I care for by the outskirts of Hillsboro, so I get my chicken fix when I go out there.

They have a mean Roo though..;(

I got attacked by the roo when I picked up two of my chicks. Talk about scary. The owner was telling me how sweet he was while she reached in to get a chick and wham he went after my foot. I had some pretty good puncture marks that took a couple weeks to heal. Can't fault him for being a good daddy and doing his job. Out of my roos, one is skittish, one is down right mean and loves to pick fights and two are sweet little angels. They would be happy to spend their life sitting on my lap. Almost makes me want to move so I can have as many as I want and keep the two roos. So maybe having a limit is a good thing for me lol.

ZooMummy...Back to the Serama....(I am still drooling over yours) Do you have any experience with D'anvers? How do they compare to Seramas? Are they alot bigger? Personality. I never thought I'd say it...but by October I just may have some house chickens...lol

Cottagechick - I loooove my d'anvers. My 4 year old carries her hens and the rooster all over our yard and catches them easily. We started them in the house and they had way more personality than the silkies, sexlinks, marans, etc that I raised (or what I remember in my youth). I have my first Serama's and so far am greatly enjoying them. My d'anver's are pretty small but a bit bigger that Serama's. I do have a VERY tame roo (hehe) if you have an interest. I got my daughter to commit to just one of her two roos. IMHO if I had more room we'd go into way more d'anvers. But then I am a chicken addict, so who knows.

Thanks, for the info. I have a D'anver coming but I am not sure whether the lady I am splitting the order with is going to take it. So the D'anver would be more of an outdoor chicken and the Serama an indoor chicken? I am not sure if a D'anver is more of a pet or a flock egg layer. Are the eggs a lot smaller than other bantam eggs? For some reason I got the impression that they were a lot smaller than they apparently are. I also have the impression that they don't lay well and that they lay super tiny eggs. But I could be wrong about that too...???? I guess if she doesn't want her I can keep her until the swap and then decide if I want to keep her and not get a serama. (or Keep her and get a serama

) And how many chickens am I going to end up with anyway. I haven't even got the chicks and I am already trying to finagle more....

Cottage, there are so many great enablers on this thread that can help you acquire even more chickens than you need (is that possible?)

My d'anver's now live outside and are quite happy. They just started laying (March hatch) and yes a small egg but bigger than a Serama egg. And I too have outside (d'anvers and many others) and inside (seramas) chickens. Did I mention the inside duck //

hoping to change that soon but she is cute. Darn single hatch.

[[[.....Is there something other than egg yolks that would be good force feeding emergency food?....]]]]

Mashed liver.

The show dog people swear by the raw blood that seeps into the package of liver for saving weak newly whelped puppies. It's like magic elixir. I've heard several different serious poultry people advocating liver for weak birds.

If that chick can't see, then keep it's feed in exactly the same place and dip it's beak frequently until it learns where the food is. Insist that it drink water often, because dehydration will kill it faster than not eating.

I don't have chickens, but with the ducks, it works better to pick up the duckling and tip the entire body to get the bill into the water. Trying to force just the head doesn't work well, and yours has head injuries so probably not good to be pushing on it's head.

A big welcome to the egg label people. I'm looking forward to seeing your artwork.

Very lovely black Americanas (uh-oh, don't remember Aracaunas?). Pretty birds, anyway.

Ok...I have already told this story at work to everyone who will listen...even those whe think I am off for talking about my chickens this past month...but no one will appreciate it like you will.

The past three weeks I have been chasing my two 3/4 month old Bantam Araucanas around the yard every afternoon sometime between 3 and 5 to put them away. Tonight I decided to wait a little longer. I thought maybe they would hunker down somewhere and I could just pick them up. So we start cooking dinner and they come to the screen door where they like to hang out and nibble on potted plants. It is still very light out. They start acting really CRAZY! The older one was Jumping on the chair and on the table onto a plant shelf. Then she would fall off the plant shelf. The younger one was cheeping her little heart out. We had a lot of laughs watching them while we ate dinner. I THOUGHT she was yelling at her sister telling her not to jump so high. I couldn't figure out what she was trying to get at. I thought maybe it was the fly strip...but no. I thought maybe it was the mint plant I had hanging there. After she dive bombed into the Aracadia door a couple of times I took it down to see if that was what she wanted. Nope. I went inside to watch her a little longer. She kept dive bombing the window. By this time they are quite hysterical with the bawking and the cheeping. It finally dawns on my little pea brain that they might want to go to bed. I go back outside and the 4 month old is hunkered down under the 3 month old like she is her mama. I grab for them and somehow manage to get the one on the bottom. I put her in the dog crate we have been keeping them in until their coop is finished. They then begin doing the pitiful calling that they do when they are separated. The other one comes and jumps in the pen. I don't know what cracks me up more. That I failed so badly at chicken charades or that they could have walked ten feet and put themselves to bed without all the drama.

I showed the pink silky to one of the ladies who is not a chicken fan...and then I showed her what it would look like if it wasn't dyed. She told me that shouldn't be called a chicken. It is a bird. She thinks the bird is real pretty. lol

Hi HoP - I have one more partridge Chantecler pullet available if you're interested in her. She's close to 5 months old...I think...

I need to go back and look, but I thought I would ask. Is anyone going to have any Polish hens or pullets at the Swap? Color doesn't matter, just would like it to be female. I'm still going to want 2 Orps (can't remember who's bringing those either. sorry!) I don't really need anymore, but I've been reading about polish and now I want some. I think they would do ok with my silkies. All three of my silkies are really laid back, they don't really care who's with them, to be honest.

The like everyone.
thanks, (I need to update my want/bringing list!)

So, Zoomummzy, here are the kidlets last weekends picture. How the heck do you guys get them to pose/sheesh. They looked very cute on my 4 year olds arm but too "flat" for a good picture. Fence is the top "guy". Jelly is second (not big on pictures I guess), and Flower is the last. Flower has less brown every time I look at her. Not very good pictures, but like I said - not big on pics - lot's of moving, and my light was not great I guess.
My kids (and my friends kids) sure enjoy chickens that HAVE to stay in the house vs ones that grow up and move outside.

Yeah, getting them to pose it hard. I usually take mine in a quiet room, like the laundry room or one of the kid's bedrooms while they are gone LOL and allow them to play and explore. Sitting in a window sill is great for photos too if the light is just right. They are challenging that's for sure. I tried to get photos of the newest babies today and all of them were awful! I'll try again in a week.
