Sounds like you are having the same problems with broody's I did today. I will be up most of the night too trying to save these last two chicks. One was the yolk sac ate baby the other was hacked to a bloody pulp while trying to hatch. I don't know if either of them are going to make it. I have never experienced this with my Silkie broody's. They were the best mothers. How is the chick?

My chick from last night is doing GREAT - and so is the one that was hiding out up under the wings during the whole ordeal. I kidnapped that one anyway, so my broody wouldn't ditch the rest of the eggs. A third one I grabbed right after it hatched - and I took the egg shell with it since it was still attached

Never can be too careful (when you're as obsessed as I am). Then, I went out this afternoon to find the first D'Uccle egg had hatched, but the egg and the chick were moved clear to the front of the nest and it had recently died

But, things improved with a fifth one that hatched and is now fluffing up in my temporary brooder box. I have a divider in there to keep the ones that are older from pickin' on the little guys. Then they graduate, and another one moves in. It's been a CRAZY day trying to keep their heat regulated. I mean it was ninety something degrees and did they really need a heat lamp??? Well of course, I've had to keep an eye on that every hour and move the box back and forth to make sure the temps stayed warm enough, but not too hot.

Now, I'm bothered by wondering if any other eggs will hatch at all. My poor broody spent a part of the afternoon squatting OVER the nest with her wings spread out and her mouth wide open because of the heat. I felt so bad for her. I kept putting water right in front of her so she could drink, and gently pushing her back down on the eggs, because after all - she's got a job to finish

I lost one of my broody chicks yesterday too. The other one is now safely tucked under my Serama Cordelia - everyone is happy.

I've been offline for quite a while thanks to a fall off a stepladder resulting in me tearing my ACL and fracturing the end of my femur. Since I'm really not wanting to go through 200 pages, when is the Stevenson event? I'm going to the Corvallis swap, but not Stevenson. Not sure which one is first....

You got it...I will make you a Kahlua cheesecake (nope, it's not on the list but I always take special requests) and I definitely want soap. I will just pick through it when you get there. I'm so glad you will be joining us but so sorry to hear about your injury!!!!

Oh and Stevenson is the weekend before the swap.

If you are interested in the "Free On Bird" let me know. Maybe there will be somebody at Stevenson that can relay to the swap.

I can bring it to Cindy.
