Thank you ZooMummzy - makes sense now.
Anyone have recommendations on preferred marans types for just pet stock, pretty dark eggs, and good layers? I have a blue marans and a welsummer, looking for input BEFORE I add 5 of each, ha,ha,ha. How do they do in winter. My other chickens, even with lights, pretty much quit laying eggs late November and started in Marchish (sexlinks, ameracauna, etc). Any you recommend (that would of course be at the swap) that may lay better under lights?
BTW the Coast was a gorgeous place to be today between heavy rain showers (day trip). Hope you all got to enjoy the sunshine.

ZooMummzy- I wonder why I thought you were bidding on a rooster

I've been reading the posts about your roosters. Guess I'm just getting old and easily confused

The brown hen is very pretty.

Bah HA hahaha. Imagine the insanity if Zoomummz was bidding on a rooster and Steve heard about that one!

As an aside, I've never had issues with paper towels, always just heard that newspaper was bad for slipping legs, and to use paper towels instead. Not that I really use paper more than half a day since they tend to go outside onto shavings when they fluff out.

You have no idea how much trouble I would be in if I were bidding on a rooster. As it is, since I was outbid, I won't have to explain why I paid over $100 for a chicken when we have an entire house full

I think I'll just go spend the money on the shoes I passed up at Kohl's today instead.....

I usually use paper towels for the first week then go to shavings. It's just much easier to clean the first week.

Yes, my roosters do tend to blend together lol...in fact, I have to update my list and at least one more, maybe two. Sigh...I hate late bloomers.
