Oregon Spring Poultry Swap April 23, 2011 in Canby!!!

I don't really know what I will have available then, my list is sort of current. It will change a lot between now and then, so I will update every couple of weeks.

I get to add on 3 new aviaries this weekend so I am very excited! That means that I can work on 3 new breeds, Yeah!

I am still looking for a Cuckoo Marans roo with feathered shanks (nothing fancy, just want one with no DQ's and that fits the breed standard as it will be used for breeding). Also, more blue/ black Marans hens/ pullets
Also looking for young GLW and SLW and a nice SLW rooster and good quality Silkie hens/ pullets

Have- tons of birds- see list- all available now and anything left in Spring with go to swap.

I didn't go to the last meet-up because I knew I'd bring something home and I'm already at my max. I'm, sadly, a city girl and I have to keep the neighbors happy. That being said...we have some chickens that might need to go to new homes or 'camps' by April. I have hens who have been laying well for years but I'm starting to see egg quality problems in the last month or so. They're at the end of the egg laying career. I think I have 2 roos in my new batch of babies (cain't have roos). One is a silkie (from SQ stock, but don't know about him) and the other is a barnyard mix hatched by my broody 'lorp. (The aquisition of the silkies and hatching are long stories!) It's only 2 weeks old, but I see legs happening already, compared to the other one. I would dispatch them to 'camp' myself if I knew how to do it. I only hope I can keep the roos quiet until April! If I take care of these 4, I'm good for getting a few more pullets. Hmmm, now, lets see.......

And there's always things to see/do/buy and people to chat with at the swaps, (not to mention the potluck food)...though I have to admit that the cages full of birds everywhere you look are VERY tempting!

FYI: Trying to get the news out to people so that more birds are vaccinated and poultry hobbyists can work towards community immunity (ie, how we have mostly eliminated diseases like measles, mumps, rubella) or 'flock' immunity.

Jean Ribbeck purchased some vaccines in bulk. She will be bringing them to the show in Stevenson, WA next weekend (October 16) for people who want to buy them. She has Mareks, Coryza, ILT and MG. I highly recommend vaccinating against MG and Mareks at a minimum, although ILT has been in WA and OR, and Coryza is seen in CA.

I don't know if she needs to know before the show (they have to be kept in a cooler)... but these vaccines are NOT the type that will cause your birds to shed the disease and be a health risk to other birds/flocks. Each vial can do 1000 birds BUT you can split the vaccine and get several uses out of it. Highly worth it.

Thanks for posting this! I knew Jean was bringing vaccines, and was planning on getting Mareks vax from her already, but it's nice to have a list!

I was unaware of a Marek's vaccine that wasn't a live version of the Turkey Marek's. Chickens vaccinated in this way are always shedding the virus that will kill turkeys. Also the Turkey Marek's based vaccine help prevent the infection from the two versions of Chicken Marek's disease but it's major "advantage" is that it prevents chickens from dieing if infected with Chicken Marek's. From what I've read vaccinated birds are 10 times more likely to be carriers of Marek's disease than vaccinated birds. Thus this works against the idea of community immunity. The meat bird breeders have backed themselves into a corner with this vaccine and now they have bred birds with no natural immunity but it has become assume the disease is rampant with hundreds of carriers in each barn.

If
there is some new news out there on Marek's please let me know.

I took a chicken to the vet a month or so ago and we had this discussion. She thought the vaccine was unsafe outside hatcheries because it's a live virus. She's very concerned about this vaccine being used by small breeders and unless it's administered properly it's ineffective. Another vaccine she mentioned actually causes conjunctivitis in humans who handle it and that one, too, she was nervous about. It's a rock and hard place dilemma. What to do?
