I get a funny look from people when they see me turn their bird upside down and look it over very well before buying it. Some know what I am doing and some do not. I can usually tell by looking at someones set up if their birds are well cared for. I have dealt with mites myself and as a seller it is embarrassing to sell a bird with mites I know it has happened to me before from my own laziness. I dust about every 6 months and as needed.

I now know better.... about quaranteening new birds and biosecurity in general, thanks to this experience. Got rid of the mites and did lots of research about bedding, where to look, how to treat, etc. to keep them away. I guess you could say, that without the swap, I may not have learned these things so soon.Out of the 2 from the swap, one has turned into a really sweet girl and I'm glad I have them both. Also happy that it was only mites and not something way worse!
Can someone tell me where to find all the other, better icons?

we dust every 3 months in the coop and lice and mite check about every 2-4 weeks but we have only 5 birds.. found out the hard way that my orp RIP Goldie loaf and Henny Penny RIP as well had mites before the big show in stevenson... that was a lot of work to get rid of them..
Sevin is super though!!

they got the mites/lice from the wild sparrows...

congrats to the BUFA lady sooo jealous...

Well, I didn't get IN the BUFA program yet, just applied for it, so keep fingers crossed! I REALLY want to do it.

I still need to google BUFA. Its on my to do list.
On the subject of chicken Quarantine, I stumbled across a show quality Barnevelder hen. Had to have her. Gonna pick her up this weekend. I'm gonna try and "cozy up" the chicken tractor for her break in period. She looks amazing.

Awesome!! Post pics when you get her!! I love the Barnies, they are so gorgeous!!

Ok. I Checked out BUFA. Sounds really cool. Hope you are accepted. That is a course that I feel a lot of people should take part in. There is much more to sustainability than growing sweet peas and tomato's in your backyard.

Agreed! I would really like to use my teaching degree, and my heart is in agriculture. So hopefully with this program I can network with the right people and get certified to combine the two!
