what kind/purpose ducks are you thinking of getting? I am setting Aust. Spotted (bantams) and Ancona (light, sweetest of sweet) or if you want to incubate a few let me know.

too many chickens, too little time, too little $$$ - oh, well.....

good to know! It's a toss up between mini silver appleyards or aust. spots. But i'm just in a research phase now -- so probably not ready to actually take action til next spring or so.

Ducks are MESSY. I don't know where in Portland you are, but its good you are doing research first. I absolutely LOVE my ducks, but I have lots of room to keep things a bit more tidy. Plus, even though people say ducks don't NEED a pond/pool, after seeing my ducks and the way they FLIP OUT when I change the water in their pool, I think its a bit cruel NOT to give them a body of water to play in.

Also, I live on a creek, so I just carry 5 gallon buckets from the creek to fill their pool. Otherwise, the water bill would be THROUGH THE ROOF. Just things to consider.

But still, I LOVE my ducks. They are such characters and endless amusement. Big pains in the butt tho.

good point. I savor the planning phase (and still have to figure out a plan funding the upstart costs). So plenty of time to, um, get my ducks in a row. Interesting point on the water $. I plan to have a roof on the run. On thing I'm playing around with in my head is installing some sort of gutter to rainbarrel/reuse the water for duck purposes. And I agree, I would want to give them a regular spot to swim.

We're in far SW (lots of racoons). Actually have fairly good sized lot, so even with the children's play structures and the intended veggie/fruit gardens we do have room. I'm planning to put at 8'x10' pen (for just three small ducks) in the shadier, uphill, further from the house corner of the yard -- some sort of modification/expansion/duckification of the Garden Coop.

Where do you get your duck feed? I've been to the Urban Farm Store once, but have never made it to Concentrates.
