Oregon

In Portland here, and just curious, to those of you who live in the cities, what do you do with your roosters? They're illegal where I live and I really don't know what to do with them. Last year we got so many roos and a sanctuary took them all, but now we would just feel bad giving the roos to the same sanctuary, what with crowding and stuff.
Rooster sanctuary? I rescue and re home all sorts of pets and I don't want to sound mean but rooster are food. If you don't eat meat can you offer them to someone who does and is willing to slaughter them?

Hens can live ten years or longer, they lay eggs for three or four years. I am sure that people keep unproductive hens as pets but if we are limited to small urban flocks it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

Well seeing as I buy all my chickens as sexed pullets it's always a surprise if you end up with a rooster, by then I've grown attatched to them and half the time their personalities are even better than the pullets. I'm not against other people slaughtering their birds if that's what they wanna do but I just can't do that.

No, not regularly, but this time of year there's a lot going on. After the swap we had on the 5th, there's the youth show at the fairgrounds this Saturday, then there's small animal pre-fair on June 9th. Then nothing until fair.
