Yep my husband and I run cows right next to it. I grew up here and know most everyone.

Ever been to crack in the ground? I have friends that live near the sinks near Christmas Valley.

Watching my 6-week-old chicks (are they still chicks?) frolic in the sun and grass in their outdoor playpen is such a joy. Happy Spring! They've already created a little dust-bath area, so cute!!!

That is cute to see! And yes they are still chicks. Just beware having chicks that young on the ground...I learned that lesson a couple years ago when I lost my favorite young cockerel to coccidiosis. The Pac NW is so wet, it thrives in the soil here.

In Portland here, and just curious, to those of you who live in the cities, what do you do with your roosters? They're illegal where I live and I really don't know what to do with them. Last year we got so many roos and a sanctuary took them all, but now we would just feel bad giving the roos to the same sanctuary, what with crowding and stuff.

Great Mother's day. Finally convinced DH I truly did just want to finish my chicken yard (as my gift) with the chainlink panels I found. Now my flock is all merged in their 8x8 coop with their 6x30 yard and looking happy. That then meant I could clean out the duckling brooder and merge ducks in their 4x8 coop and 10x10 yard. All seemed so much happier, we now have 2 big pens to feed (instead of 4 random ones). Made my Mother's day happy and kids got to play with chickens.

There is a guy named Pete, who owns Oregon Peeps. He works out of the Urban Farm Store on Belmont. He will take roos and rehome them. It is his business. Call the UFS and ask when he will be there and you can drop them off.

I also use Craigslist to rehome roos.

Rooster sanctuary? I rescue and re home all sorts of pets and I don't want to sound mean but rooster are food. If you don't eat meat can you offer them to someone who does and is willing to slaughter them?

Hens can live ten years or longer, they lay eggs for three or four years. I am sure that people keep unproductive hens as pets but if we are limited to small urban flocks it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
