I'm totally new here - from Eugene area (actually closer to Crow) and haven't got my chicks yet (ordered) due mid April, still working on coop - and it will be my first time raising them... wish me luck - also anyone in the area want to start a "support" group - trade extra stuff etc??? (sorry no icon yet - unless you want a cat to Supernatural one...)

What kind and how many chicks are you getting? I got 'starter' chicks one year ago from costal and wilco. Do you get to have roosters?

LOL - that was cat OR Supernatural (cat-obvious) the Suprenatural refers to the show... anyhow - CHICKENS: yeah - mine are on order - I'm getting the "mixed heavies" (25) from McMurrey - for layers and meat, and then I stopped out at Diess (Diess?) on my way into town and they had a schedule for chicks arriving (pullets only) and had some of the breeds I wanted so I ordered 5 Aracuna, 5 Black Sex Link, 5 Buff Orpingtins and 5 Golden Laced Wynd.s - and yeah, probably overdid it and I STILL want more. LOL (depending on what I get in the mix because they are a lot of the breeds I still want - RI Reds, Black Astro, maybe a few others...) so yeah, a bit hesitant about the "processing" of the roos, would probably pay someone to do it if it was available around here, but then again, I'm willing to learn. I figure if I'm gonna eat meat I should :"get my hands dirty" so to speak. I just trashed my plans to alter a woodshed and start from scratch on my coop - have a place with a cement slab that fronts a big grassy yard so I can build the coop and enclose the yard - will probably divide the space for the roos/pullets so they don't compete - think I will hit Bring tomorrow for some of the supplies that I don't already have stockpiled, any suggestions for places to get the best prices for the wire etc, I usually use Jerrys for anything I can't get at Bring since they are local as opposed to a big chain.

I live in North Portland in the St. Johns neighborhood. Love it! I've got great neighbors and I'm not the only house on the street with hens!

I lived in St. John's for about six months a few years ago, right across from Cathedral park. I was surprised at how quiet it was even though I lived right next to the bridge!

Really? I have one of these cardboard constructed new houses and I have to say, every time a truck drives past the Lombard/St. Louis intersection, my whole house rattles, and I don't even live on either of those streets! I'm the only one in the neighborhood who can feel it, but we sure do feel it. It's like tiny little earthquakes all day and night.

Not that I dislike St. Johns or anything. I actually love it, despite the rattling. I love how some nights you can hear the foghorns off the river and the train whistles. Both romantic sounds in my mind.

I don't know, maybe it was because I lived in an older house, or maybe I just blocked that part out.

i've been lurking for a bit, but this is my very first post.

i'm in outer se pdx, and have just started building my coop. ok, my gf is just starting to build. i will be getting chickens next month, and am very excited. 13 years ago, when i still lived in nyc, i bought "chickens in your backyard" and have wanted them ever since.

if any locals have resources (or would like to sell me a few hens next month), just say hi.
