Get those gorgeous eggs from @Zanna and a couple of Americauna chicks if available! I've got Silkies for the kids to play with and possibly show but they're not great egg layers in general. I have one hen who lays almost daily, one hen laid everyday for a month went broody and another nine month old hen who has laid zero. We also have a small yard so small birds for us. If you're going for docile entertainment or egg layers there's a big difference. Plus those eggs, look at them gorgeous!!! I want some for Easter I wouldn't dye them, they're beautiful the way they are!

They have a lot of shade from the trees, and I keep the big coop door open day and night (don't have a problem with predators, just neighbor's dogs getting loose). I also put out ice bottles for the flock to lay against if they get hot (also do this for my rabbit).

I would lock them up at night if they don't have a secure run, it's only a matter of time before a predator comes along. And loose dogs are a big problem. You can add little windows to your coop with welded wire screwed over them. Don't use chicken wire a coon can chew through it and don't use staples they can push them out. Just trying to help hate for something to get in one night. You would sleep better :D

Yeah, I would never sleep at night, sometimes I literally shoot up from my chair because I thought I didn't lock up the chickens, but then a remember I did and I had a mini heart attack for nothing:p.

Lol too funny! Sounds like me :gig I scare myself thinking I'll forget. If I have to have my daughters do it I'll call them and remind them when it's almost time and then insist I get a call when they are all in safe. Good thing their cell phones are attached to their hips.

LOL I'm afraid I have CSD...Chicken Safety Disorder:p

People say chickens are stupid because they go outside when it's storming...I say they aren't little cowards that get scared of some thunder:p.

Haven't had a problem in the 3 years I've had chickens. The neighbor's dogs only get loose during the day, and I reported them, so it has only happened once with each neighbor it has happened with. Only predators that come around at night are skunks (VERY rarely, about one night a year, if that), and cougars, which completely ignore the chickens.

If there are any other critters around, they don't come into our yard. Probably because they know we have dogs, and the neighborhood cats are always around (they don't go after chickens). Plus there are horses in the pasture, and they would alert me if there was anything out there. I'm also getting guineas, so yeah.

I'm not going to lock them up when there isn't a problem with keeping the door open. They like getting up before the sun, anyway.

They all sleep in the rafters, too. Even the turkey gets up there on occasion, but she's usually on a shelf.

Not guineas!:O They would defiantly escape and fly into the trees, every guinea of mine did that and every night they did I saw blood on the ground and another guinea or two lost. It's just a bad idea, never underestimate a raccoon!

Quote: Not trying to be rude or mean here, I'm really not. But just because it happened to you doesn't mean it will happen to everyone else. A local lady raises guineas as well and has no problem with them taking off or sleeping in trees. I have never seen a raccoon out here in the past 11 years I've lived here, either.

One of the reasons I want guineas is because they eat all kinds of bugs, including wasps. And we get a lot of wasps around our house.

I'm just saying, we got so many batches and put them in a safe place and they just were gone.
