Oregon

Hi everyone! Long time lurker but just joined today. We have three in our flock aaaand of course we want more now. ;)

I'm in Beavercreek outside Oregon City. We have two hens and one duck, which we just learned is an Ancona thanks to peeps on this site (he was a free duck from a neighbor and she didn't know what he was).

We hope to get a few more Anconas as he's been so mellow. The local breeder here just ended their business (Boondockers) so if anyone knows others, please let me know!

I saw a few on Craigslist but am new to the poultry-buying biz so not sure if that's a safe place to get them or not. (I'm heading to forums now to research buying tips.)

Looking forward to meeting other locals.
:welcome
Glad to have you here!
I tried one chicken breeder in Portland that I found on Craigslist. It didn't work out but not because it was Craigslist. There was something neurologically wrong with the chick we got.

No experience with ducks except the ones who hang out in the pond at work.
Good luck in your search!

What kind of hens do you have?

Thanks peckpeckpeck and sorry about your chick. :( I found this great thread on the forums that had questions to ask Craigslist sellers. (Could use for anywhere you buy, actually.)

We have Plymouth Barred Rocks, which are excellent layers and don't mind the snow and cold at all. We just started allowing them to free-range and will be moving them to our new barn so they can roam in the horse pasture. Lots of predators in our area so I'm still nervous about letting them wander, but so far so good.

What is this amazing looking chicken in your profile?!

Thanks for sharing that great link about Craigslist! I didn't even think about biosecurity when buying but of course it makes sense. I just focused on wanting to see that I'm supporting a humane breeder.

I have one Barred Rock. She's a little whiny but super smart & probably the most predator aware. With the cold spell right now, she looks even more like a fluffy bowling ball. Great forager!

The girl in my profile is my Easter Egger Kiwa. She looks the most fierce but she's a big cuddle bunny. Lays gorgeous large blue eggs too. I just love her fuzzy muff & beard.

I'm so jealous you have horses. We get hawks, eagles, & coyotes here plus neighborhood dogs & cats. The horses must help with keeping some predators away though, right?

Anyone else over this cold? Hard to believe less than two weeks ago dh and I were talking about needing to mow the lawn . After the week I've had at work I need a day of sitting in the coop with the birds, but I lack the nice down coats they have that makes these temps bearable

Hello from Springfield :)
I don't mind getting snow, but serious cold with no snow just isn't ok :p
Our girl Rosie doesn't seem to mind too much though, I usually have to convince her to come in out of the rain too or she will wait until the last minute.

Welcome @fuentemoon ! :frow

Sounds like your Rosie is a trooper! What a sweet looking girl too. I love her fluffy butt. :bun

My girls go out for a little bit but then come back to hang out in the covered patio. Spoilt girls!

Personally I was over the snow before it started. What happened to the lovely spring we had in Jan? It was glorious!! :wee

Sorry to hear you had a hard week! :hugs
Hope you got your chicken fix in.
It's amazing how they can make you laugh on even the worst days, right?

I wish I could just put on some warm bloomers & fluff up like they do. Especially with another snow in the forecast. :th
