Oregon

Except for the first night, when I obsessively got up to check on them every couple of hours, raising chicks in the bathroom adjoing my bedroom has been fine. Lovely and easy even. Until last night, when I swear the little buggers never slept! Every activity was at top volume too :p
3 weeks old now, just a few more to go right???

Yup, this could be me again, any day! I've brooded two sets of chicks in the bathroom last year, and I've got the itch again real bad. My Sweetie is going to drive by Coastal Farm and Ranch today, "just to check"......

Hello Oregonians! I am new to chicken life, I live in Damascus and wonder if anyone has seen weasels in the area? Our coop is just about done and our neighbor said he spotted one, wondering if I should rethink the fencing on the run! I'm hoping he is wrong, we are definitely coyote/racoon/opossum proof!
Welcome!
How are you fencing the run? Are you going to close the coop at night or leave the pop (chicken)door open day and night? How comfortable are you with the risk of bird loss (ie, they're livestock and I'd be bummed to lose one or they are beloved pets and no loss is acceptable)?
I have my run done with poultry netting on all sides with hardware cloth also on the lower three feet . The top is solid roofing materiel. I close the pop door at night as an added layer of security because with it closed the coop is predator proof by design. The run is predator resistant....and I am comfortable with the security as is. I've had wven less secure runs (ie just poultry netting or even complete free ranging during the day)...but I was aware of the security level it offered and comfortable with the risk I was taking based on my personasl assessment of the risks in that location.

I love all these new Oregonians on our thread!!
Welcome everyone!! :frow

I haven't seen weasels but I know there are minks in our area in Beaverton. @Ol Grey Mare gave some good advice... hard ware cloth, covered run. Depends on your priorities & comfort level.
I free range mine during the day and then lock them tight at night. But I know they are pretty savvy & have figured out some good hiding places.

Hi everyone, I'm here in Portland, Oregon.
What part of Portland are you in? Most people I know who have chickens in the city are in NE. What's your flock like?

I am outside of Woodburn. Where are the Turkey Peeple at?
Good question! I only know of 1 person in Portland who has a turkey. Just one tom. He freaked me out the first time I met him because he kept following me around with his wing dragging & I had no idea what he was doing -- if this was a sign of aggression or what! Turns out he was just trying to show me how sexy he was :drool:confused:

So do you think it's finally spring?

Yes finally spring, well aside from the freezing temps overnight. brrrrr. I love when my Tom drags his wing like he's a big shot. It cracks me up. I have several random breed chickens and some mallard ducks too, but I really focus on my Turkeys.

Hi! The coop itself is pretty secure from Raccoons and Coyotes, my husband tends to overbuild everything. We went with the 2 inch corrugated fencing all around and have a corrugated metal roof all around the run. What worries me is the little weasels weaseling their way in through the corrugated roof. If we lose a chicken or two, I would be sad, but that is part of living where we do and having chickens I suppose. We aren't sure how the dog will do with chickens yet, so not sure if they will get to free range during the day.

Could you post a pic of or link to the fencing?
