I also use pine shavings or cedar. I like the smell of the cedar better. I live in Portland and even though my pin is covered I rake out the old stuff weekly. The water blows in sometimes. All in all I like the shavings and the girls love it when I clean it out. If there was lots of rain sometimes I will just through in a few handfuls to soak up some of the water and for them to be walking on dry shavings instead of wet ground.

My last post was two years ago, we didn't have birds yet and weren't really ready... today we finally took the plunge and brought home 2 buff orpingtons and 2 silver laced Wyandotte chicks. :-) we still don't have a coop but we've got a few weeks to rectify that!

ChickenDaddy523 I have been told not to use cedar by many people because yes it might smell nice but it has much finer dust particles the pine and can cause birds to have respiratory problems.

Regarding using cedar shavings for bedding, or even coop building materials: I believe it is the fumes, not the dust, that people are concerned about. But I gather the concern has been exaggerated. Lately I've been reading from lots of breeders who use cedar either as bedding or as building materials in their well-ventilated coops.

Hello all! Just popping in as I am in Oregon as well, in the hills between Sherwood and Hillsboro. I've got an old Plymouth Rock hen and yesterday I brought home 3 young Salmon Faverolles (2 pullets and a cockerel). So nice to see so many Oregonians here! :)
