If you live in Hillsboro, and have been wanting backyard chickens, now is your chance! The city of Hillsboro conducted open houses this past February to gauge the level of interest in changing the city laws to allow chickens/livestock within the city limits (which is currently illegal). The response at these open houses was mostly pro-chicken! The law hasn't been changed yet though, which means everyone who wants to be able to raise backyard chickens in Hillsboro needs to show their support! The city is conducting 3 open house meetings this month to give people an opportunity to review the proposed policy options and to recommend additions or deletions to the language. The open houses will be held on the following dates and times:

*Quatama Elementary
6905 NE Campus Way, Hillsboro 97124
Monday May 17, doors open at 7 PM

*Century High School
2000 SE Century Blvd, Hillsboro 97123
Thursday May 27, 2010 - doors open at 7 PM

*Civic Center Auditorium
150 E Main, Hillsboro 97123
Thursday June 3, 2010 - doors open at 7 PM

Please try to attend one (better yet - all!!) of the meetings to show your support for allowing Hillsboro residents the chance to become more self sufficient! Forest Grove allows chickens, Portland allows chickens, and Beaverton is working on it! Times are changing, and more and more people want to be connected to their food, and to know first hand where it comes from. You don't have to have a speech prepared, or a presentation - just come and show your support! So far it was worked great.

I like it. And you're very nice to take such care for your neighbor. The only trouble is that we are 9-5ers and keeping him in the garage until noon isn't an option most days. I had someone else tell me to put a mask on his face until later in the morning? Like one of those falcon helmets? Seems like a lot. Am hoping he's got one of those "quiet silkie crows" people talk about. Or that he turns into a hen.

Actually I strongly "dislike" my neighbor, lol but I'm afraid he will call the cops on me (he does weekly for one thing or another) again so I keep my birds quiet. I have never wished ill on a person...but I do him. Yes, it would be difficult if you work. You wouldn't know if he crowed during the day either until you got home, which wouldn't be a good thing probably. So far I have 4 roosters that I plan to keep using the same method. Only a couple times have they went off during the day but it was because wild turkeys were roosting on our house and they didn't like that too much, lol.
