Hi Everyone!

I am not new to BYC, but have been MIA for almost 2 years! I movedfrom Spokane WA to Long Beach CA and, of course, had to re-home my flock of 32 chickens!

I have been missing them ever since, and even though Long Beach allows 1 chicken per household (weird), I have been sans chicken ever since.

However, my partner is considering acceptin a job in PDX, so once again I may have my own (small) flock! I am very excited to have "chicken fever" again!

Anyway, anyone in PDX that has info on the best place to buy baby chicks (exotic/rare breeds mostly), that would be great. I've heard of a Nursery (Pistil's?) that may be a good place. Also, I have a small three egg incubator, so hatching again would be fun. My concern there is that I would most likely end up with at least one male...and then would need to find a home for him.

Also...any fun info on PDX in general, or great neighborhoods would be much appreciated as well. We will be renting to start, but will probably buy within 6-12 months.

Thanks!
Chris

Hi, Naomi's and Urban Farm will have some interesting chicks this year. Urban Farm has a calendar that list what kinds of chicks they are getting in by week. Also there are a lot of wonderful Oregonians/Washingtonians with very nice stock who would be very happy to sell you a chick or bird. As for the roos...if you end up with one there are places to take him for rehoming. A lot of times people are looking for a roo to guard their girls. There are people who want them for not just the soup pot, but IMO that's Ok too.

As for 'hoods...Check out Milwaukee. I think you can have a ton of chickens in that city!

Welcome to Oregon and check out our swap in Canby if you will be up here by then!

And Pistil's is great - there's a really neat gal there named Michelle, and she's a BYCer (Phaisan is her byc name).

Hey everyone! Loving the BYC website, been a lurker for about a month now. Already getting looks from the husband and "are you doing that chicken thing again?!" But in the next breath he asked when the chicks will arrive and how long we have to get the coop built, so at least he's on board!
