I also say, build the nest boxes. Maybe build 2 sets and put one of them on the coop that the tough guy is in it. That way she doesnt have to enter that coop if you build exterior access boxes.

Show her how to flog a rooster. I gave my son a plastic baseball bat to carry in the barnyard for a mean rooster. It took one episode to teach the rooster to leave him alone. He was about 5 or so. My other son did not need self defense training.

To Wbruder - the little roo would probably do ok with banties BUT he really has never been outside of a house and doubt he'd transition at least in this weather. If he started in summer, maybe with a good coop. I could be wrong, he might do fine and I just feel guilty. My outside chickens would be maaaad to read this as they walk around in the mud I am combatting.

To Chicken Rustler - I totally got it, and if he was the one laying roosters, you'd all see a 100 x 100 chicken coop with picket fence design from the money I'd rake in, lol. I'll give him a talk. (I do have a cucko marans hen with full spurs that lays well, hmmm, wonder )

To barmarandotte - I do think I will build the nestboxes, but

my dd is sort of stuck as she "gathers" the eggs out of the large dog crate in the middle of the living room.
And to chickened - I agree but no baseball bats in the living room (haha) but maybe when my new cage comes she can "instruct" him a little better with out batting her 10 ounce plus rooster. I am working with him (and so far I just tell her let Mom get the eggs).
I am so sticking to outside roosters. Of course I'm already pretty attatched to my buff silkie roo and my flock master Blue Marans, so they'd better not flog me. Though the big guy would be good supper I'm not into the blue silkie meat, much

Well, I gotta tell you my son's beloved "Binga" (a white silkie roo) is the only chicken I've ever met that I heartily detest! Enough so that I am tempted to make stew out of him. Have any of you ever met a chicken you just couldn't stand? It makes no sense as he is well behaved around humans, there is just something about him...

Though the big guy would be good supper I'm not into the blue silkie meat, much

Have any of you ever met a chicken you just couldn't stand? It makes no sense as he is well behaved around humans, there is just something about him...

We have had a couple sessions and he will do OK for a while and then he thinks he is all tough. I find that it helps me rehome my roos when they are jerks. Gash, who I'm trying to rehome, has turned into a mean little "sneak attacker". He is a very young boy, and completely sex-crazed, witn a harem of 20 he only has to share with his little Mille Fleur D'Uccle father. He is most definitely making the rounds and the ladies don't like him. Every time they turn their backs an d try to peck at something, he is on. Top of them, grabbbing their heads unkindly.

I'm sure he will grow out of it, but he is certainly just like a teenager. However, since I'm gettin g lots of fertile eggs to hatch, I am kind of happy that he is so "efficient"

I am so glad it isn't just me! I have been feeling so guilty about how I feel... my son adores him! You would not believe how my son carries him around like a parrot or something! The mindless chicken perches on his arm and away they go! Totally unbelievable.

I cannot stand "Frank"! He is beautiful, small, upright, pretty buff and Frizzled Serama. He is looking for a new home and probably coming to SWAP with a pullet as a bribe. DH Chris likes him but he loves a few others more so I think I can pry the little "poop" out of the cage and out of here =:~)
