Just hatched 7 Bantam Blue and Black Rock chicks last night, it's my best hatch percentage yet!

And it was all done by my crappy homemade incubator!
Looks like I have 2 blacks and 5 blues, which is great because I am wanting to add some more blues to the flock.

for lots of pullets, my last hatch I had 75% males!!!

The little bantam chick that is being raised by my Buff hen with 5 Australorp sisters, is soooo funny! It is pretty much the same color as the others, maybe a little grayer on it's back. with it's muff, and it's wings held kind of down, it looks like a little mouse running around. It wants to be sat on all the time and it will wedge itself under one of the bigger chicks! It thinks if it's head is covered, it must be all good, so there it is with it's fuzzy butt sticking up, untill the other chick gets tired of standing there.

LOL I love it when they do that!

Thanks everyone for your welcome!! I've done so much reading (both here and in books) trying to learn!! I have 7 chicks right now that are about 4 weeks old. We plan on downsizing to 5 if everyone turns out to be hens

which is the sad part about living in town. But I'm so excited. My 17 year old has really pitched in and this has become our project together!! Does anyone have Cochins? I was wondering about their feet feathers in all the rain here and how they do. Right now I have 2 australorps, 2 cochin, 1 mottled Java, 1 Copper Maran and 1 golden sex-link. If you had to downsize, which breeds would you prefer to keep?

I have feather legged chickens, and their foot and leg feathers are a big mess most of the time. LOL But from your list, I would keep the 2 Australorps (love them!!) the Java, the Maran, and one of the Cochins. :) I am not a fan of any of the sex links, they are good layers, but I don't like their temperaments. ;)
