I had the biggest scare of my life! I swear, I nearly had a heart attack, lost a lot of sleep, and even shed a few tears.
So, as you all know, I was gone for about a week at the State Fair. I had been getting calls a week telling me how good everybody was doing. So, everything was going great for me and there were no worries about the animals at home.
On Tuesday night my brother calls me and this is the conversation:
Me: "Hey, What's up?"
Him: "Well, nothing much. By the way, how many chickens are supposed to be in the shed?"
Me: "Um, let's see... 6 chicks in the white pen with the heat lamp, 1 little black chicken in the green pen, and Miss Peepers and her baby in the black dog kennel. There are also two pigeons and a rabbit in there, too."
Him: "Oh."
Me: "What? What's wrong."
Him: "Well. There's only one live chicken in there and one live rabbit and that's it. And a bunch of feathers everywhere."
Me: Nothing but silence.
Him: "Hello?"
Me: "Which chicken is it?"
Him: "A little black one."
Me: "K. Thank you. Bye." I said the last part a bit feebly.
I then burst out in tears of disbelief and disappointment. I was unable to sleep that night because I was so worried and was ready to drive home, but after a few deep thoughts and a bit of agony I decided it'd be best to wait until morning to make the 3 hour drive back home.
So, I rushed home, getting up at 6 in the morning and rushing home. Admittedly breaking the speed limit a ittle bit.
When I got home and went into the backyard, there were chicks running around everywhere, miss peepers and her chick were off in the neighbor's yard, and the pigeons were just flying around.
As it turns out, the cage doors had been left open and then the door to the shed was left open and they all had escaped. Nothing was dead, nothing was missing, everything was fine and dandy.
And I nearly killed my brother!
