Hmm, I believe that excessive amounts of flax can also harm the chickens liver. However, if i remember correctly, it doesn't drastically effect mortality rates. (2-3% more on diets with 15-20% flax). The key, would be to make sure it is expelled flaxmeal, not ground flax seed. Excessive amounts of ground flax will have a drastic effect on liver health. You might have your manufacturer try small increases, and see what happens. It has been a while since I did feed trials with more than 10% flaxmeal, however, it seemed like 15% was where we started seeing a color change. It was not appitizing, and the eggs were thrown out. It is hard to get your brain to accept that it is edible...... Oh, and it is the whites that change to brown, not the yolks.....

Also, we use this product for GMO and Mycotoxin testing on every incoming load. You may want to suggest this to your manufacturer. It is pretty expensive, but is great peace of mind.

We have never seen a load of flax pop positive for GMO genes...... Wouldn't surprise me if it has shown up though.

I know this is almost 3 years after your post but I hope things have been going well with your chickens & I hope you discovered scratch and peck organic soy free, corn free chicken food at www.scratchandpeck.com . There were so many pages on this thread that I honestly didn't read them all to see if anyone else had posted (heck it might have not even been available when you originally posted). Anyways for anyone else on here who lives in Southern California I am working on becoming a distributer for Scratch and Peck & am in the Norco area if anyone is interested in contacting me to get their feed at the best prices without driving to the high desert or Costa Mesa as is the current situation. If you wanted to start an Organic Wholesale Feed Group out there in NM, I could probably assist you, by having your feed ride with ours. It will save on shipping. We will be expanding to a 2nd city in Arizona in June and it is possible, we could expand out to you if you feel there is enough demand. It seems the standard non ,soy corn or canola feed product would be around $25.00 per 50lb bag. Additional aspects which would need to be in place are:

- Forklift and/or pallet jack.
- Order of at least one pallet or fifty 50lb bags of feed.
- Someone and someplace where people can come by to pick up their feed. There is a little money in it for a coordinator, but not much. You'd have to love what you were doing or know someone who would love it....?

However if you simply want to pick up a little feed while you swing by AZ, that can work too. We order every two months, on the 15th and the feed usually comes the first week of the following money. I avoid soy because I have an ovarian tumor and soy is a phyto-estrogen. That means our bodies recognize soy the way it does estrogen, and that's bad if you have any kind of estrogen sensitive problems: fibrocystic disease, breast/ovary/uterine cancers, etc. It's good i suppose if you're trying to deal with menopause symptoms, but I don't want to risk having soy in my feed.
Problem for me is finding a local source for soy free organic feed, or even the raw ingredients to make my own that isn't GMO. I live in SW Mo, and there's just nothing. I ordered a bag online and paid as much to ship as the feed itself cost. Yikes!

Soy is an estrogen mimicker. It causes girls to go into puberty early and boys to grow breasts.

This extra estrogen is effectively rapidly aging your body. So women who are only 40 years old actually have breasts equal to a 60 year old and thus more susceptible to cancer.

Soy is one of the greatest nutritional hoaxes ever and the reason the industrial-banking complex loves it is that it means more profits for healthcare and big pharma.

I second the vote for the soy free Scratch n Peck feeds. Our chickens love it. It looks like real food,instead of some sort of mystery food, it actually smells good too. I plan on contacting the company for more info soon, but there is a variety of probiotics or fermented by-products as well. In WA state we pay about $27 for the 40lbs bag.

We feed our flock Scratch & Peck too, and they love it! It looks and smells great, and the hens don't waste a crumb of it. Whatever spills onto the floor gets cleaned up in no time. We briefly switched to an organic pellet (we were about to go on a long trip and the store that carries the Scratch & Peck is less convenient, so we had to make a last minute temporary switch) and the difference was noticeable - the chickens hated it. They lost weight, egg production went down, and there was so much wasted on the floor of the coop. We're back to Scratch & Pack, no exceptions!

We avoid soy and GMO's like the plague, and for awhile I was getting the corn-free soy-free feed (I'm allergic to corn) but now we get the one with corn (but no soy), and it hasn't been a problem for me. Over winter I wanted them to have the extra fuel from the corn, but will just stick with it year round now.
