Organic Soy-Free Feed Supply Near Atlanta?

Hello everyone,

We're soon to be new backyard chicken owners in Atlanta GA. We plan on raising layers and looking for recommendations for organic soy-free starter/grower and layer feed. Also, does anyone know of a supplier near Atlanta?

Some of the companies we found online that are based in other states have incredibly high shipping prices for our small orders (starting off with 5 chicks). Are there any companies with good shipping prices?

I just discovered Backyard Feed Company. It's in FL & they offer free shipping. Know it's not ATL, but it's your neighboring state, organic & soy free. I read they mill upon order & ship.

I am in the metro atl area as well. The only things that seem to come up online are scratch and peck, grubbly's, sometimes egglands best. But like someone else said, you cannot be sure of what you will get, mill date wise, when ordering online. The local TSC, online has Dumor, Nature's best and purina (I haven't had to order yet, but am looking to prepare, so I do not know if TSC has these brands already in stock at their store, or what.).

Does anyone else have any preference or what's good or not good about any of these brands?

Very interesting! Thanks for the link. I like that they are a small, USA business. Have you noticed anything different since feeding them this? I heard the cracked corn is not good for the birds in the summer, that it actually increases their temps, and with the heat in GA and Florida, this concerns me. I already have one bird that cannot tolerate heat well.

You said that you used Purina, I am trying to find an ingredient label for purina. You wouldn't still happen to have one, would you? I certainly do not like that they are not very transparent about their ingredints. They just keep saying it is non gmo ingredients. Why not tell us what exactly is in it? Oh and their added Oyster shells, does that mean we don't need then to give them extra calcium?

Sorry I don't have a Purina label. I had been feeding Purina All-Flock & it was not organic. I've just switched over, so not long enough to notice difference. I just like the fact that it's local, small business & the freshest available. When I'd buy Purina at the feed store it was ~3 weeks old. Now am supporting local & the turn-around time is phenomenal, plus it's delivered! I too have heard that about corn too, but have also read to feed frozen corn on hot days so ??? Mine free range & sleep in dog crates at night on an enclosed porch. When it's super hot I provide electrolytes & also put frozen water bottles in their waterers. I also try to provide a cold, juicy fruit middle of the afternoon to cool them down. I only have 3 girls - a buff orpington (4yo) & 2 easter eggers (1yo).
