OT-Quilting

Thank you Missyprissy!

I just couldn't bear to part with his baby clothes. I used all the little patches sewn on them..frogs, grasshoppers, Whinnie the Pooh. I have alot more stuff now that would have been handy such as a rotary cutter, cutting board, quilting hoop and of course the machine lol. I cut up a cereal box for my pattern/size of square and really just winged it. But it has alot of meaning for me and there's no way my little brat is going to outgrow it!

Memories in quilting........yep

My father in law passed away a year ago. After his death, when my mother in law was ready to clear the closet of his clothes, I took what was left after the family took their pick. Several denim shirts, western flannels, PJ's, even boxer shorts. Arnold left 7 grandchildren, my husband and his sister as well as his wife of 47 years.

It is my hope to be able to give each of these people an "Arnold snuggle" for Christmas this year. I can't even begin to say how honored I am to have the opportunity to do this for those who loved him most.

On a side note, I was able to arrange the last hair cut he ever had (this was in the nursing home just a few days before his passing). I saved a few clippings of his hair. I would like to present each of his two granddaughters with a locket containing a bit of his beautiful white hair.

What a thoughtful and wonderful way to remember him. A heartfelt gift and a part of history for all to keep.

Interesting how quilting ties memories together. I wasn't going to mention this as some might find it sad. But when I don't know what else to do in tough situations....I quilt. Sort of a family trait, my Mom would sew in the middle of the night if she couldn't sleep.

The fruit basket wall hanging that I posted was made during my Dad's last three days of life. We knew he was dying, and I didn't know what else to do with myself. I sewed every minute I wasn't at the hospital. I didn't realize until the day after he died, what a fitting piece it was. I looked up at it and realized it had 5 pears, the same number of people that had been my little family. The quilt became called Fruitful Life. As my Dad did live a great life.

It is not a sad piece of work for me to look at, I always smile when I see it.

I am teaching myself with the help of the internet and an older lady from church. I was blessed with a great grandmother and her daughters that quilted. We would go visit in the summer and Christmas was spent there as well till I was 15 then just summer. It was just a week at a time but to me it could have been forever. I was always called a baby cause I liked to be around my mom and dad where ever they were. Well my Granny and Aunts would all be around the quilting frame hung from the ceiling at Granny's down the hill. I guess I picked up more than I realized cause it sure has helped with this quilt I am doing. This is my first quilt and I think I am doing pretty good. I love the thought of all the love, time, and thought that is put into a quilt. Oh yeah and the memories from ones received from Granny. I found a place that throws out scrap material by the bags, so all my material is free. The place lets you have all you want and the only thing is you can't go thru the bags and get out what you want you have to take the whole bag. I have been there twice so far and wow have I got lucky. This last time I took all he had left which was 28 bags and some were fuller than others. The only thing I have to buy is thread, batting, and backing. I hand stitch by the way and I love the peace it gives me. Sorry to ramble on....

I don't but my wife does. For my birthday last month she made me a chicken quilt. It's a wall hanging with actual pictures of a lot of my birds, our dogs and our cat. I'll try to get some pics and post them. We went to a quilt show this past weekend.

I quilt!
My family teases me about it because I started only about 7 years ago. I guess that's old for a quilter. I wanted to make one for my first grandchild. Since then I have made about 15 quilts. I do maching peicing and most of my quilts are tied. Its quicker and I just recently decided to learn to machine quilt.
I love it!
