Something else I forgot---don't put fencing in the background either. Really hard to hide even with the best background blur, and for me, at least, it instantly knocks the picture out of the running.

Agreed. Also, put some thought into colors. If you're trying to get a picture of a brown bird, don't take it when they're laying in a patch of dirt.

:clap Hear, hear. A good rule to remember is "The eye likes contrast". Learnt it in relation to art, but it applies to photography too.

Maybe we could start a thread on critiquing photos that explains this. I know I have hundreds of pictures that I could post, lol.
 
I was going to try to get some pictures of my brown turkey, but not that all the grass and weeds are brown I don't think it's worth trying. :(
