Ouachita Blackberry Experience?

I just recevied a free 3 ft. tall plant with a couple of berries on it. I'm trying to decide where to plant it - Looking online for info too BUT wondered if anyone has ever had one of these?

My main concern is the full sun issue - In S. Texas full sun is too much for TOMATOS! lol I lived in Arkansas once upon a time, and I know berries grow sometimes with some shade.

What do you guys think? (And NO.. I'm not planting it on the fence between the chicken yard and the garden.. lol They'll have to run around the other side of the yard to steal MY berries!

Well I've never purposefully grown Ouachita blackberries, but I grew up in Arkansas near the Ouachita river. The wild blackberries there preferred to grow along the edge of the woods where they had plenty of loamy soil and afternoon sun. It was a constant battle to keep them in control on the eastern edge of the clearing. Well-shaded bushes matured more slowly and were stunted. The humidity there is quite high, I'm not sure if that might make a difference where you are.

yeah.. that's what "I" was thinking. I, too, lived in AR for a couple of years, and NE Tx has quite a few vining little wild ground growers.. but.. this one, from my research appears to be 'caning'. Grows in a stick like bush... and loves full sun. (A term I've Never trusted living in TX... NOTHING loves 'full sun' down here.. lol

Guess I'll just plant it somewhere w/no fence.

The ones I'm talking about are a caning variety, and a pretty tall one. They're pretty hardy, though, I bet they'll take off no matter where you put them. Good luck, wish I could grow some up here!
