Hi all, the first time we had chickens we bought older chickens so we did not have to worry about raising babies. Well I quickly realized the benefits of knowing your chickens from the time they hatched and raising them yourself. So after convincing my husband we sold our older chickens and we ordered some baby chicks.

I used a cage we use for timeout for the older naughty birds as a brooder, I put it in a room attached to our house up on a picnic table. So I don't have to bend down to spend time with the chicks. I set up a nipple waterier from an old water picture I had and when the chicks arrived on Monday we were ready to go. I got them from McMurray, 15 RIR and they threw in 1 rare (I think it is a Golden Wyandontte?). I had the vaccinate them for Mereks and for Coccisdossis. I also ordered some Quik Chick for their water and some other stuff that I can't remember the name of that you mix with water and it turns into a green gel and they practically attack it and eat it like crazy, it is supposed to give them water and nutrients they need to get them off to a good start. Not sure if it does nor not, but all 16 are doing great so far and they sure are cute.

We have an IP camera on them so we can watch them from the house and my husband set it up for me so it could stream to the internet in case anyone wants to peak at them. (and so he can watch them from work) You can find it here (I promise it is just baby chickens not anything creepy) http://wingedwonder.click2stream.com/

Thank you all for your unknowing help as I read through pages and pages of this forum as I waited for them to arrive and I am sure I will be reading through more as they grow.

Enjoy, Tracy in WA

Thanks so much for sharing your webcam. Now I have a new one to watch! I talked to hubby tonight about setting an ip camera cam up in our coop he's building this weekend. I can't wait until ours is up and running!!

You are so welcome, they are so fun to watch, we unfortunately lost one this morning, from what I have read that is not unusual. Just a bummer. :( Keeping my fingers crossed that the rest are happy and healthy for a very long time.

Thanks guys, I am not sure what happened. My poor son is the one who found it this morning and called me at work. Chicken Math went to work when I told my husband. I had gone to the local Co-op to get the Chick Grit i needed and told him that they had some Chicks. He sent me back to buy four more. hmmmm one died and we replace it with four??? Crazy!. Now I need to vaccinate them as my others came vaccinated already. Another new thing to learn how to do I guess.
Have a great evening, Tracy in WA

What a great idea to do a webcam! I may have to do that when I move our chicks out to the coop. :) I enjoyed watching yours.
