We found a large shingled dog house on our property (we recently bought the house) and took the nails out of the back and put hinges and a lock on. We used an old shower rod for their perch, and we are getting their nesting boxes together out of an old toy holder of my daughters.

It is all recycled materials! I can't wait to take pictures of it fully together with the nesting boxes in it and all. The birds are around 7-8 weeks now!

My daughter and I are going to paint the outside of it too. So any suggestions for chicken friendly paint would be awesome!

You can use any kind of paint. Just let it dry all the way through before exposing the chickens, as the only problem for the would be the fumes as it dries.

Is the shower rod metal or plastic covered maybe? Chickens would prefer something not slippery, like real tree branches or wood. I don't know about your climate but wide roosting bars allow them to cover their feet with chest feathers and warm them in cold weather.

I agree with drumstick. The shower curtain rod is probably not a good choice. It's slippery, it's round, it's too small in diameter, and chickens, unlike many other birds, prefer a wide flat surface to perch. Lots of folk use wooden 2"x2" or 2"x4" for perches.

we need pictures! I would def not use the shower curtain rods at all. find something else. wood preferred.

I can't wait to see pictures of your green coop! I love recycling as well. I used a neighbor's old shed (they delivered it to my house for me) as one coop, and old dog house on my property for another, and used some old pallets and remnant lumber for a third. I use tree branches for my roosts; nice large round ones. Very green, and cheap, too!

Good to know about the shower rod. We had a giant windstorm a few months ago and there are branches everywhere on the abandoned lot next door.

I am too new still to post pictures... When I am not such a newb I will deliver pictures.
