Our duck is mounting our chicken

That’s right...our duck is mounting our chicken. Any suggestions on what to do?

I raise ducks, geese, and chickens. They share a 1/2 acre area with a 60' x 60' pond. My rooster (RIR) will mount anything that he can catch, including the ducks. My ducks and geese will mount each other (not the chickens), however, recently I gave a friend 2 Rouen drakes to start his new flock and that left me with 1 Kakhi Campbell drake. I had an owl kill him so that left me with all hens. The hens will mount each other, just like one is male. I have never had any injuries to any of my birds from mounting each other. Sometimes I think the ducks and geese are going to drown in the process...but never had that happen either.

Ive heard tons and tons of stories of ducks tearing apart hens as they mount them. Ive witnessed it myself. One of my fellow friends had a chicken skin plucked by a drake because the drake kept mounting it. I guess you’re just one of those lucky ones.

I had a duck that would still mount the hens despite the fact that he hated them, pulling out their feathers and chasing them away from the feeder.

Sounds like a nice flock btw. :)
I have a mesh fence to separate my two species or my Ducks will attack my Chickens..If someone gets across the fence they run for their lives..:gig

To OP: Provide separate housing or get rid of the drakes. Yes, a drake will kill a female chicken if he tries to breed her. And no, I wouldn't trust that there is a "non breeding" season. Mounting behavior is not JUST about sex and reproduction. It is also about dominance. No matter the reason, a drake will kill a female chicken if he breeds her.

First time i saw it I was freaked out because they will injure your chicken...this was back when I only had 3 drake that were given to me by a neighbor 6 yrs ago now I have 21 (chicken and duck math) I thought that without hens in the equation. I would be fine...not! They turned to my chickens so I split the ducks up and put the aggressor in a pen with 2 duck hens I purchased from my neighbor he wanted no part of them for about a week then I added a kiddie pool to the mix btw ducks get excited about breeding in the water and that's what triggered him was the pool and normal duck behavior I left him with the girls for another 2 wks then let them out to free range not a problem since
The op needs to know that her duck does not know how to be a duck and that they will most definitely have to get more females and hopefully her other drakes don't start this behavior and they also need to know and watch for overbreeding of their current female duck but as much as the ducks will protest she needs to break the current dynamic and get her current drake and hen to bond so he understands that duck booty is better than chicken booty

Definitely a non breeding season..I raise Ducks. Do you raise Ducks?..

Have in the past. Are you saying that a drake will never mount a hen duck in the winter?

Well my Runners and Buffs mated almost all winter last year my Muscovy's quit in late fall till the next spring. usually in march sometime. So some may have a set breeding schedule but my Runners didn't get that memo. lol
