hi Paul no it works on almost all chickens . Even if you look at grown chickens the roos have straight rows the hens uneven. How are you this morning

hey all update 11 wellies have hatched so seven to go hopefully. Then I do it all over again next week with you guys. Gee I love to hatch

OMG... I couldn't stand it and thought I was done with candling, but when I was in there to check on that second batch of eggs, I decided to do one more quick candle on the first bunch before touching the newcomers.

I saw a FOOT!! I was gently rotating the egg, trying to see if I could figure out what was what, when a little foot came down on the bottom of the shell to steady itself. EEEEEEE! There's a bird in there!!

On the other eggs, I decided to toss two of them. One had a crack in the shell, and the other was severely thin shelled and felt "chalky" and unsmooth, unlike all of the other eggs. Interesting note... the cracked egg, when I opened it to check it out, had a double yolk. So that's 3 out of 12 of those eggs are/were confirmed twins. There may be more, because I honestly couldn't see two yolks in the cracked one before I opened it/tossed it. One looks infertile but the others have the yolk starting to spread out like my first bunch did. So we'll see if and what comes of this lot.

Yep, feather sexing only works on chicks bred for the trait. Lots of hatcheries breed for it so they can sex easier. If it's working with the hatchery chicks, then they have either been bred for it, or it's just a coincidence.

Jamie, isn't it nice to be able to sex the Wellies right off the bat? Can't wait to see pics of your new babies - I'm going to go look right now!!

Final count for me at this point:
9 New Hampshire Reds
5 BBS Orps

I certainly wasn't expecting to have so many of the NHR's develop! Yikes!!!! Of course, there's still time for something to go wrong. . .
