Our first chicks

We picked up 6 chicks tonight to start our chicken adventure. 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Australorps and 2 Barred Rocks. The 2 Speckled Sussex are about 4 weeks old and the rest are about one week old. I am not sure that we actually got Barred Rocks though as the 4 smaller chicks look identical and do not have a light colored dot on the heads.

In any event they are in the brooder and seem to be getting along. One of the smaller 4 is quite adventurous and will come to my hand when I scratch around in the wood chips. She allows us to hold her and she is quite calm. The others are less interested. Maybe once they get a little settled they will come around. I might get a couple more tomorrow afternoon, if I can find a couple of Blue Laced Red Wyandotte chicks. My wife is starting to get interested too

They look great - nice one! From my experience it seems that the most inquisitive chicks are males - could be coincidence, but there you go. Chicken maths has surely got a vice-like hold of you - makes the rest of us feel better

Is the "friendly" one the chick in the far corner? The one with the obvious comb? Watch that one. If the comb turns red in the next few weeks, you have a cockerel.

You sure caught "chicken math" early! Make sure the new additions are under four weeks, and try to resist adding more after they get to be a month old. Pecking order is well established by then and new additions get trickier.
