We are fairly new to chickens. Our Daughter and her husband wanted to get rid of 2 of their adult chickens as they were bulling the younger ones.
We had talked about getting some earlier so we decided to adopt them in the spring of 2019 (Hillary and Pecker, already named LOL). They are both very tame.
We purchased a used chicken coop online that came with feeders and waterers. We then put up a 4' fence 25'x25' for a run. W bought pine shavings for the coop and feed for the chickens. They both loved their new spaces!
2 months later, our Daughter said they had bought 12 silkie chicks and decided to get rid of the remaining 4 other 4 month old chickens they had left. We thought what the heck, we'll take them too! a month later we found out one of them was a rooster. Gave him to a very good friend that fell in love with him!
So we now have 5 chickens (so far)
.
All the chickens are mixed breeds. Hillary is mostly red with some white and lays large darker brown eggs, Pecker has a reddish neck but then turns darker all the way to tail, lays lighter brown med eggs. Blondie is tan and white, lays smaller blue/green eggs, Callie is multicolored and lays smaller blue/green eggs. Last but not least Is Snow white, she's all white and lays medium tan eggs.
Our favorite aspect of raising backyard chickens is the delicious eggs we receive! But there is so much more. We have found that every one of our pet chickens has their own personality! I guess I never thought that before. Some really like to be petted while others don't. They also talk back to me (at least i think they do LOL). Most of them will follow me and or my husband around the yard or even come when i call their name! We let them roam around the yard when were working out there and they love to eat all the bugs, especially the wood ticks!2
Some of my other hobbies include gardening vegetables, canning, baking, making cards, scrapbooking, and flower gardening.
My husband and I have 5 children and 13 grandchildren. We moved from MN to northern WI on 48 acres when we retired early in 2015. We also have a siamese cat. Love to Fish, 4 wheel, deer and turkey hunt and go camping.
We found BYC while searching the internet for some information on how to better care for our pet chickens. This was the best site we found, had to join!
