Our Little Egg Business

We have a few of them around here. Around October you'll find wagon loads of pumpkins and gourds along the side of the road with a price list and a drop box for the money.

Love your egg sign

Hubby wants a roadside stand so bad! Once our lil ladies start laying I think we will build a little hutch with a fridge and some shelves just to sell extra garden squash, eggs and our handmade soap .... at least it will pay for feed! <3 it!

So Cute! I sell my extra dozen or so a week to the mansion (and I mean MANSION) up the mountain from us. I put the dozen eggs in my mailbox and she puts $3.00 under my doormat. It is kinda funny when I come home from work and I see the gigantic Range Rover in my driveway, picking up eggs for the week

At our local grocery a dozen of 'local organic easter eggs' (blue eggs) are $6.00!!! And at Kroger the free range organic eggs are around $4.50/dz
I was planning on charging no less than $3-$4 per dozen, especially if I have them on organic feed --that stuff isn't cheap!

Where my sister lives in Northern Michigan, everybody does self serve - corn, produce, honey, etc. My friend closer to home cut out a section of his barn wall and inserted a dorm-size compact refrigerator. It looks really neat, just open the door from the outside of the buiding, and put $$ in the jar. I have a little egg business at work ($3.00/dozen) and have no problem getting rid of eggs. They are large/extra large and a bargain at that since we feed organic feed.

When I was in Hawaii, honor system produce stands were everywhere. I don't see them as much around here, though. I've got customers lined up for us - family, friends, my chiropractor, etc. I have been giving them a box of pullet eggs to try, and then I plan on selling them at a reduced price until they're a little bigger. It'll cover a lot of their feed costs, which is nice because they're on organic feed.

We have a dozen hens, 3 of which are retired layers, so we don't get a lot of eggs.
We share the eggs and property with my sis and BIL and our geriatric mom so we mostly use up what we get,
but on occasion they build up so that we can sell a few.
We have six up and coming pullets (13 weeks old) so that should help.
I found a large brightly colored childs' plastic easel with chalk board on one side at the thrift store
and use bright chalk to print my egg sign.
We are on a busy road so I put the eggs in a cooler with a few ice packs, sign and money bucket at the end of our driveway.
We use the honor system too and have never had a theft yet.
We charge $3.50 per dozen for free range. I think people like the mix of brown and blue/green eggs.
