Our rooster crows at night - why?

I have noticed that my roo will sometimes crow at night -- but I can only hear him if I'm outside, which makes it pretty easy to pinpoint the reason on those occasions. He's usually fine unless his sleep is disturbed by strange noises and/or lots of activity going on. I'm thinking it's part of his protect and serve mentality to warn the girls that there's a perceived problem.

That doesn't make it any easier to live with if the noise is an issue for you, though, but he probably isn't doing it just to be a nuisance.

My rooster crows around 3 am. Sometimes a jet will be flying a bit low or a loud truck will go by. On a really moonlit night, he crows often, even I don't hear anything. Sometimes I shine a flashlight around to see if they are being bothered by animals. I think sometimes he can see the white horse walking outside the window. I don't worry about the neighbors. They are far enough away so it shouldn't bother them, but I live out in the country and this is a very country sound.

I have 20 roos in the barn. Every once in a while one will crow at night.

Who knows what sets them off. I have a dusk to dawn thingy on the only light in the barn. It does not go completely off and gives off a dim glow. They are used to it and they sorta like it to see what is about them.

One suggestion. Put him in a small enough cage at night where he can't stretch out his neck. If he can't stretch out his neck he can't crow.
