OUTBREAK!!!!! drooping wings, lazy and death.

Check out the symptoms of Marek's Disease. I had problems with it several years ago. I had a necropsy done to find out for sure. There is info. on this site as well.

Fortunately the symptoms of Marek's didn't line up at all...it wasn't even one that was close enough to consider.

It was defintely the vitamins in the water. I learned I should have stopped using them when they were about a week old.

Everyone is looking fabulous, alert and spunky-even the one that didn't look so hot two days ago.!!! WooHOoo!

It was kind of amazing here as well. I went to his house to see what was going on with the babies because he had lost three in one week and saw that their water looked like concentrated, cloudy apple juice and the chicks were sitting still; not like healthy chicks. A brief discussion followed and fresh water was obtained for the remaining four babies. They immediately stood there and drank and drank and drank . . .

However, one little golden comet, even after drinking her fill, sat around and just sort of continued to cry in a very soft voice and I was really worried about her when I went home. The next morning he called to say that they all survived the night and were now running around happily, even the little golden comet. Yeah!

It's great how resilient they are, isn't it?

AngieDee, seriously all you did was change the water ?
Was it 'Quick Chick' ?
I have used the 'quick Chick' electrulyte solution several times with new arrivals and had no problem !
What was making them sick ?
I'd like to not make the mistake...!

Chickielady,
The problem is not the brand of electrolytes but the quantity of them in the water. The package is distributed for massive scale operations like industries who use 256 gallon waterers. At the one gallon level it must be really diluted.

Quite simply you have to do some math. Look at the weight of the package and how many gallons it mixes as a package. Then you'll have to calculate how much that would be per gallon weight-wise. I used a digital scale that measured in grams and ounces. There are 28 gms per oz. You could also do it by dry measurements but one of them has one tablespoon per so many gallons.

What you can do, and I did, was to use a Mason jar and mix a stock solution of something like 10 gms per quart. From there I diluted it further by using one/fifth of the solution per gallon. This was last year and I don't remember the exact measurements.

But you have to read the label and directions on the package carefully.

The mistake I was making was that I used it until now and they are 5 weeks old.

I should have only used it the first week, most especially when they first arrived because they have gone a couple days without any water (if you order by mail or get at a feed store).

Long term use can create dehydration.

So, which did you use, Sulmet or Wazine? You didn't specify the one that worked for you. thanx
