outside time? when?

Yeah, try and wait for a nice sunny day, preferably in the 70's or better. Otherwise, they have a miserable time of it, remember, they don't have a mama to crawl back under and warm up! lol You can let them out at any age, it just has to be warm enough for them. Mama hens that have their chicks in outdoor pens/coops, obviously have them out from day one.

I think I am too overprotective. I want to let them outside but I am afraid they are too young, too cold, etc. I keep thinking "when they get bigger" but they get bigger every day.

I've been considering bringing them outside with a heat lamp to retreat under. I have extension cords....

Well, it was 57 degrees outside, and sunny, so I decided to give it a try. THEY LOVED IT OUTSIDE!!! It was a big hit.

But I'm pretty sure the big chickens thought they were treats...

It was 66 degrees here today with no wind. I took 11 of my older chicks outside for their first time. There chicks are around 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 weeks old. I let them plat for 20 - 30 minutes. They really seemed to enjoy it.

I'm obviously not overprotective ENOUGH but I had the little ones outside over the weekend (we live in Florida and it was almost 80 out) and we all had a BLAST. They're about a week old now.

My son, George, can't believe we have chickens and apparently Miss Kitty (the RIR) can't believe they have a George!

I was a little worried about how Mira, our Chihuahua, would react to the new arrivals...

...but after a couple seconds, she decided she was their new mama. I still wouldn't necessarily trust her with the girls alone, although I can't imagine her doing anything to them, but she made me laugh.

I spent our only nice day in weeks to finish the coop. Now the temps are back down and looks like more rain.
Although they love their new pad, I would love to get them outside!
Maybe this weekend.
