The first time I hatched out chicks, I borrowed a Little Giant incubator from a friend who also gave me some of his barnyard eggs to practice with. My first hatch was around 60%. I gave the hatched chicks to the fellow who lent me the incubator and the eggs. I bought a styrofoam incubator with a turner because I was working at the time and worried about having the time to hand turn the eggs. Eventually after experimenting my hatches got better. I have had a couple of 100% hatches but that is rare, most now are over 85%.
The first time hatching is a bit nerve racking but before you know it you will be looking forward to hatching the next generation. Remember what works best for someone else might not be right for you and vice versa. The incubator, where you have the incubator and your climate will play roles in how your hatches are. Good luck and have fun, experiment...
