This is actual an urban legend. There have been no documented cases of this happening.

I used to have a cat that would climb into the hamster cage (20 gallon fish tank with a screen on top). The hamsters would cuddle with the cat - I have pictures somewhere around here.

yanno it's strange. we have 6 cats. all are indoor/outdoor cats. when they're outside, they hunt.....they leave me "gifts' pretty frequently. but the chicks in the brooder? they completely ignore! always have. of course i don't tempt fate, the brooders are covered anyway.......but it's like the cats recognize that they are off limits in the house *shrugs*

I was worried about the cats with my chicks as well and tried to build the brooder as cat proof as possible. On day one the cats looked into the top of the box and saw all the chicks. Have not even seen the cats in the same room since.

.......They might be digging a tunnel.

I've heard this, too -- that the cat will curl up close to the baby's head and the baby's mouth and nose accidentally get blocked. The cat isn't trying to hurt the baby. Not that it would make a difference to the child's parents.

I'm glad to hear that. If (really big if there) I ever have an infant and better socialized cats, I'll probably still try to keep them out of the crib. I used to have a cat that like to sleep across my neck.......it'd get pretty hot and uncomfortable by morning.

I would never leave pets unsupervised with a child. Same as I never leave my different pets unsupervised together. Accidents happen on both ends.
