I am building a small breeding coop that will have 3-4 hens. I was going to put just one 2ft wide nesting box instead of separating it into 2 because my girls are always sitting on top of each other anyway. Will this be ok or is there a downside? opinions?

I'd make it two. Some hens do prefer one box over another and yes, they may squish together, but it's important to allow them their privacy for stress reasons.

This is exactly what I'm doing - one 2'x1' box seperated into 2 nesting boxes. Good luck!

I went to a community nest box and it's worked out much better for us. They do it anyway, at least this way they have enough space and there's no squabbling, now.

We have a huge covered hinged nest box in with our hens. They all go in and out but seem to choose the same corner to lay in most of the time.
