For chickens, that is... My mom and I share a small flock of (currently 12) laying hens on her property in Poulsbo, Washington. We've been raising chickens for several years. Our girls have a small hen-house at the back of mom's old barn, with about 900 square feet of fenced-in hen yard attached, which is not big enough to keep them from turning it to mud in a matter of days. Our biggest struggle to date has been giving them free-range without losing them to hawks or coyotes! We try to be philosophical about raising animals somewhat in defiance of the laws of nature, maintaining some perspective on their general place in the natural food chain while protecting our investment as much as possible, and still enjoying the sight of our pretty birds and their beautiful, perfect, delicious eggs!
