oxine... anyone used it?

For the small amount necessary and the many uses it has, I don't think it's expensive at all. When you consider that I could have had eight birds die from fungal infections and now, they are all fit and breathing great, seems it did the trick for very little $$$. Couldn't have done that with bleach and antibiotics in the case of fungal infections are useless. So, I have no issue with the price whatsoever, even though we are on a VERY small fixed income.

My original post was to ask if it was worth the money simply because we don't have much extra at the end of every week. I wanted to hear something bad about it, the stuff sounded too good to be true, and everyone said the only thing bad is the price. I think that's where the discussion of cost came from.

Guess you got your answer, nickie!

I do think it's worth the price, yep. Trust me, I know the problem with no money at the end of a pay period, too! We are retired military living on that pension check alone.

If you want to clean waterers out, bleach is just fine. Use bleach for cleaning the coop, too, and for whatever you can safely use bleach for, but for misting coops against disease every week and the birds themselves, Oxine is what you need. There are other disinfectants like Tektrol, but you can't use that around the birds. If you only use the Oxine for those specific things and bleach for everything else, you can stretch the gallon a long way.

I started out doing this. But I started to think, hey, clorox isn't safe but Oxine is, so why am I using Clorox? I'm retired and on a fixed income too, VERY fixed. But I just don't like to risk it. If I were to wash them out and rinse and rinse, then maybe, but with the horrid drought we're having, I just don't want to waste water when I can use something safe and effective to prevent the problem in the first place without having to pour all that precious water on the bare dirt. I figure it's cheaper in the long run than saving a few bucks on a gallon of anything.

I agree, I do, but some people just can't see their way to using Oxine for everything they used to use bleach for around the coops and I understand that. An experience like I just had is very convincing, though.

Do you know, this thread came up when I was just seeing a problem with one of my part English Orp 7 week old babies with a breathing problem. Odd thing is I didn't think of using Oxine till I saw the thread. DOH. I'm still not sure if it's just the 108 degree heat (he only wheezes in the afternoon on the hottest days - and none of the others do) or what, but believe me I'm fogging them now.

Hope he's okay! That is pretty darn hot.

Okay, so this is an old thread but I was looking for information on fungus vs bacteria in lung issues. I have a 5.5 month pullet with a breathing problem and no discharge from eyes or nostrils... ever illness I look up the symptoms don't quite match up. She's still chipper and eating (Though less), but is definitely a bit lethargic and has to stop to catch her breath regularly. I can hear a crackling sound when she breathes. I picked up some wormer, in case that was a problem... I got some vetRX to try and help keep her breathing better... but I just couldn't find enough info to feel comfortable applying an antibiotic or fungicide not knowing what she has.

Sounds like setting up some Oxine in an old vaporizer and tenting her crate could be useful if it's either fungal OR bacterial? Any chance it would cause harm??

thanks!

I thought this would be crazy but apparently not.....
....didn't read much of a couple things on the web about using it to fog for inhalation.
This thread has lots of info....https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...s-users-please-share-usage-dosage-storage-etc

I know, right? it sounds too good to be true. At least if it's not helpful for the chicken I can still use it to sanitize my milk containers!
