Paint Silkies ~ European Lines

I'm sorry, I should have made that more clear......I was referring to Judy King's Paints.....she & I both got Paints from Judy Lee. It just crossed my mind that maybe the difference in mine & Judy K.'s bird could be related to melanization. Since neither of us have any Paints reproducing yet, it's hard to test the theory.....

Bren, I think Bat Cave was talking about my paints...not Judy Lee's.

Mine have the pink pigmentation holes on their feet, but so far very little, if any off color in the hackles. Here is a pic of the cockerel. He has just a hint of the off color. Of course the red light skews the color a bit.

So you are both talking straight birds from the breeder? Have you got chicks yet? I am lost I guess???? What are you each going to cross to? I am talking F1s off the American lines and then F1s off the European lines. We don't see a difference one way or the other .....yet. LOL

My plan is exactly what we discussed in Oklahoma...I will breed the pullets to a black male and the paint cockerel to black females. The only thing I am going to do first is to breed the paints together for about a month and hatch as many paint chicks as I can. This is just an effort to get more paints on the ground at my farm. After I have hatched about 20-25 chicks, I will switch to cross them on the blacks.

I think what Sandy is asking is this:

1. My trio don't have any off color in their hackles at this point (they are about 5-6 months old) but they do have the pigment "holes" in their feet, but beautiful black eyes
2. Sandy's cockerel DOES have the off color in his hackles, but he doesn't have any pink in his feet...they are solid black.

Is there any correlation between the pigmentation or lack of it in their feet and the off color in their hackles?

No, I don't have chicks yet...my trio is too young, but I believe they are very close to POL.

I will just have to really take a close look. I have quite a few but our weather has been up and down and they are growing well but I am not in with them close enough to KNOW is there is a consistent connection. Some do have yellow eyes while other BIG dark eyes...this is so NEW it really is exciting each hatch. I am just about ready for the first chicks to be breeding. THAT will be another page in this.

Even with this cold weather for the past week this is what hatched. I am getting 50% black 50% paint from black/paint breeding pens. For now I want to mix up the gene pool so going to avoid paint to paint. I may give it a try this spring but for now these are the F1s from my first attempts.

Just the paints. They are all paint...some are more loud than others. You can see the pigment holes in the toes of most.

Sweet!! You know I'm actually excited that most of the paints are not vaulted. As we hav discussed previously, it is not necessary to have a vault to have a nice crest and we can avoid some of the issues that accompany vaulted birds.

Good looking chicks, Bren!!
