I just got a baby chick that isn't even a week old yet. Had her out for a while and she seemed fine, running around and peeping like crazy. Went and put her in her box for a bit and happened to walk past later and saw the poor thing was panting, I also noticed that it looked like her wing was drooping. We raised the heat lamp and left her in for a bit, then checked her again and she was panting still. She was strangely quite also while in her box. So I called my grandmother who is experienced with chickens and she confirmed that we had her at too hot of a temperature, we also moved the box so that only partial of the box is under the lamp. In our current location it is 70°. Is she still too hot? Or sick? Any help would greatly be appreciated!

Signed,
A worried chick mama

Sounds like she is over heated. It may take her a while to cool off. Make sure she has access to cool water, maybe with some electrolytes in it.
If the chick is already a week old, then you can probably shut the heat lamp off during the day. Is the chick by itself? Chickens are social creatures, and if it doesn't already, I would get it a buddy.

She is by herself. I have a fully grown hen now and plan on putting them together when they're old enough. She seems to be doing better now, will still watch her carefully. My first chick didn't have any problems like this, but every chick is different! Thank you for the advice!
