Papa pigeon attacking his baby. What can I do?

My baby pigeon is now almost 6 weeks old, and its papa is attacking it. I have no idea what happened. I thought it was a friendly chasing game, but papa seemed rather violent. It has never happened before. Does anyone know if papa is really just playing or if papa is serious? What can/should I do? I am sure that papa is its papa. I watch it hatched from the egg.

My baby pigeon is now almost 6 weeks old, You may have to isolate the squab and hand feed him for a few days until he can survive on his own.

I had one unusual case where the ♂ took up with another ♀ while the squabs were only days old. The ♂ scalped and killed the younger squab; Scalped the older squab (but it managed to survive); I isolated the female and the second squab until it matured.

The male and female will have started to make a new nest and will either have more eggs already or are about to lay them.

At this time, if your youngster tries to get back into the nest to roost or snuggle with its parents it will be attacked and driven off. Its time for it to stand on its own two legs now!

Have they got enough space to fly away from each other? Are then in a cage or a pigeon loft? If they are in a cage you need to take the youngster away to a new cage or it will get badly beaten up.

If they are in a large aviary / coop or loft then the young one will learn to stay away from its father.

After a week or 2 the chasing will stop as the young bird gets more confident and independent.

I good tip is to place some boards leaning lengthways along the back wall of the loft... here the young birds can hide to avoid the attacks from the adults.

I have some boards and plywood leaned against my loft wall (placed there more by accident than management) works well good post Jak2002003.

I agree, he should be flying and eating on his own by now. I breed pigeons and most babies are weaned and flying by 3-4 weeks and most of them are eating on their own by 2 1/2 weeks.

Help! The last two egg cycles, the babies have died. Also one of the moms died. I’m thinking the male is a murderer. What can I do??
