Parish Council Treating Geese Poorly

The Farm was opposite the village green on the side of the pond. It was torn down and is now a housing estate. The original flock would always be in the building site because they still viewed it as their home. The builder was going spare as they would always be making nests.

The road also wasn't as busy as it is now and they had food and water on the farm so didn't have such a need to be on the village green like they do now.

Times have changed and I wish the Parish council would see that.

Why not talk to this women who was in the article in the paper and others that live close by and see if they would be willing to care for the geese if the council would put up a fence Maybe they could furnish the money for proper housing and feed and those that would could take turns caring for the geese. If i was traveling to your Parish and saw these geese i would be very upset with the setup or lack of set up these geese have. It makes the parish look really bad and maybe that can be stressed to the council. Heaven forbid this happens but next time a dog or car kills one take pics and give to the local paper. Allso what the one woman said about not taking her child to the play ground because of all the goose poo is another valid reason for either finding these geese a good home on a farm some where or fencing them in.

Sadly the quotes in the video are directly from a member of the Parish Council. They don't see a problem with how they are keeping the geese. There is a "goose group" set up that is supposed to look after the geese but they literally haven't done anything other than decided on a name for themselves.

These are suggestions that have been put to the council but they don't want to fence the geese in. If they did that they would somehow have to transport water for the geese everyday. They would either have to set up a water bowser or dig under the road and get hooked up to the water mains. They don't understand that the stream has dried up, the water in the pond is filthy and the green is not suitable area to release geese. Maybe they do see this but won't admit it, until they can see the problem they won't try to come up with a solution. This is what has been so frustrating with the whole situation.

When the original flock was being killed off and the parish council was deciding if they were going to get more geese one was attacked and was being eaten by someones dog. The lady in the article thought the goose was dead and took it to the Parish council chairmans house to show him the torn up goose to make him understand the consequences of releasing more geese. When she showed him the goose it was then that they noticed that the goose was still alive. They poor thing was a mess, the lady had it put down and took pictures which were given to the newspapers. The newspaper said it was too graphic to print.

Seems your beating your head up against a wall till you can get enough people to confront this "council" and they can finally see everyone has had enough of their stupidity

Exactly, thats why I made the video and hope enough people see it and email, call or write to the parish council. I don't know what else will fix this problem except public pressure. I think its clear from just the video that something needs to be done. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I have written to a number of wildfowl clubs in Britain and hopefully they will contact the Parish Council and have some influence.

I hope you can get alot of support from these clubs. and from the local folks . Keep us updated.

Maybe there is someone who is not a member of the goose group or a member that would actually like to do something other than deciding on a name? There has to be a nearby bird lover who could help.

If they pen the geese, they can give them a large aviary and put a garden inside the aviary and it could be a beautiful focal point instead of what they have currently, which is poop everywhere. The goose group could get their hands dirty helping to construct the aviary and plant it. I am sure there are gardeners in the village who could help landscape the inside of the aviary. It is stupid to not want to pen the birds. Penning them will prevent the birds from being hit (which could also save a person's life possibly) and they won't be killed by dogs.

If a few people in the village agreed to feed and water the birds that would be great. To water the geese someone could come bringing a few jugs full of water that they filled up at their house and put that in a water dish in the goose aviary. It wouldn't be that difficult and they wouldn't have to spend money to have a hose put in near the aviary. You can throw out grass seed in the aviary to help keep grass in there for the birds.

This isn't a geese aviary but this is something they could make:

Your ideas a great but water fowl need lots of water, they need buckets deep enough to wash out their nares and to keep their eyes clean and healthy, so water would be a challenge unless their is a faucet close by they could use to fill buckets, oh and geese love to splash out alot of the water in their buckets too. Still it can be done and that looks like a really nice place you have in the pic.

Oh right sorry I do not keep any waterfowl so I forget about all of the water requirements. Yeah re-filling their little swimming area would be difficult without a nearby clean water source and I didn't think at all about them splashing out the water.

Maybe there is someone in the Village that lives right next to the green that could keep the birds in an aviary in their own yard? I realize this would be asking a lot from someone though especially if they are not that interested in keeping birds. Also I don't know if anyone would have a yard big enough for that.

If the Council won't care for the birds and the villagers don't really want to help (or care about the geese being there), then they really ought to just give or sell the birds to someone who can care for them. Why keep birds if you won't care for them properly and make an effort to learn how to care for them? Then they could do as one person mentioned and just have a geese statue.

Even before the Parish Council bought new geese it was suggested to pen the geese in if they were so desperate to reintroduce them. They were not willing to do it, I think its because of the cost and effort. Its a small village that doesn't have a lot of money and they didn't want to be seen spending money on geese when money should be spent elsewhere in the village. So it was just easier to buy some goslings, release them and let them fend for themselves.

The geese use up so much water. The lady in the article looked after the original geese, she dug a hole in the ground and put a porcelain sink in for the geese to use. Had to sweep out water and fill it everyday. The geese loved it and they had fresh water to drink everyday.

These are all logical suggestions, but I do not know if the Parish Council will allow it. They will be the ones to have to agree to a fence being put up on the village green and to pay for all needs of the geese.

There is going to be a Parish Council meeting on monday and the topic of the geese is on the agenda. I hope that they decide to build a fence for the geese to keep them safe but I am betting that they decide to build a fence around the playground to keep the geese out to end the poop problem. I will have my fingers crossed but they have never seen these geese as living breathing animals and their welfare hasn't been their concern. Sadly they are viewed more as disposable ornaments.
