Well, Rio is sick :( Of course she hid it really well, since that's what birds do, but tonight she is all puffed up and lethargic. And of course I am out of Baytril, so I can't even get her started on that. We'll go to the vet tomorrow. But this makes me very nervous, since this is what happened with my last cockatiel, Shika, and he died at the vet's office while we were waiting to be seen.
I hope she pulls through. :fl

I have had budgies for longer than I can remember. After selling my then-current pair a few years ago, I figured I was done, but someone offered me two males recently and I couldn't resist.
I have had my eye on society or gouldian finches for quite a while---we'll see if that works out or not. I'm trying to keep a lid on my indoor birds because I don't have much cage space.

News on that front - I had the tiniest amount of enrofloxacin left and was able to get a little dose into her. Then I put her into a ten gallon aquarium with a 60 watt heat lamp on one side. She's now walking around in there yelling for me, which is a huge improvement. So I am cautiously optimistic.

I also just put a small dish of seed and a millet spray in there to try to tempt her to eat and she's in the dish right now chowing down.

But that definitely was the last of my enrofloxacin so I'll have to take her to the vet tomorrow to get more.

They are very pretty :love I miss my budgies. If I can get Rio and Cricket living in the same cage, and I think I can because Cricket is super interested in her and definitely would like to meet her, then I might use his old cage for budgies.

Okay, back from the vet. This whole thing was an adventure. My good avian vet that I loved retired a couple years back and sold the practice, and the new vet doesn't do exotics.

So there was a place I'd taken my birds before, but I was a bit suspect of them because they give out meds without weighing the birds, so I don't know how they're calculating dosages. They've also done weird things like put a duck with niacin deficiency on antibiotics - I know that because someone who bought ducklings from where I work took a duck there and had that happen. They also told her to increase the niacin, so that's good, but why antibiotics?

So trying to avoid that, I called a place right near me to ask if they see birds. They said they do. Cool, so I asked for an appointment. They said they couldn't get me in until tomorrow. I asked if I could please have some Baytril to start her on until the appointment at least. So the person asked the doctor and the doctor told her that she had never heard of Baytril before, so I would have to wait until tomorrow. Any bird vet should know what Baytril is, so I was like, okay, nope.

Called the place with the weird dosing. They said I could bring her over right away and they would fit me in. So I did, waited for about an hour and then the doctor came in. Told me it was a respiratory infection, gave her a shot of enrofloxacin (Baytril) and a shot of meloxicam, and gave me tetracycline to give her. Still didn't weigh her, so I don't know how he comes up with dosing, but oh well.

She is feeling better, probably the meloxicam. I gave her a dish of her crappy old seed mix (she was actually being fed the same crappy mix Cricket was, go figure) to get her to eat and she dug in.

So, she's now going to get meds twice a day and will be spending the next few days in her cage under a heat lamp. Me putting her under the heat lamp and the tiny bit of enrofloxacin I was able to give her last night very well may have saved her life.

Just gave Luna the first dose of tetracycline and yep, she didn't care for being toweled at all. I wanted to keep her out for a bit after so that she doesn't associate coming out of the cage with bad stuff, but she really wasn't interested. I tried to give her some veggies and she just wasn't wanting them, so back into the cage she went, and she put herself back under her heat lamp. Hopefully as she starts to feel better she'll take treats after the meds so it's not so bad for her.

I like her new name. And I hope she feels better soon. It is good you caught this early.

Now watch, she'll actually be a boy and I will have to rename her again!

Yes, it looks like I caught it early enough to treat it, which is good. Poor thing probably was already sick when I got her; they hide illness so well, until it's almost too late.
