Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Now, I have found the exact opposite. I have 2 partridge pullets that are very nice type, but people have been going crazy over them being "best to standard" pullets that they have ever seen. They both have the rich chestnut colored crest. Not too dark. They have won Res.Ch.FL at the only 2 shows that they have been entered. The last show there were a lot of black & white silkies that I think were more finished than my kids, but for some reason people have been making this huge fuss over these 2 ladies. And I don't mean just a little fuss, I mean a huge fuss. It has caused me to lose a friend over it, for which I am very sad.

I'm not sure I understand what you are meaning about your partridge pullets? Are you saying they were selected over better type birds?

I do agree with the comment about true friends. Why should differences of opinions about your birds matter to anyone but you?

I'm not saying that they are not better type at all. Just more finished. Maybe a little more weight on them and more fluffy. My birds are very nice. Every time they have been shown they have done extremely well. Judges are constantly talking to me about them. People have just been going ape sH&* over these birds. Mr. Wulff, from Poultry Press says that I have the best partridge Silkie pullets that he has ever seen. Several others have stated the same exact thing. I always thought that they were pretty, but these people are crying that they are "the closest to standard that they have ever seen". Maybe it's just the whites and blacks seem more filled out, but they could have been older. My kids are just now coming into the 6 month range. Some won't be 6 months until after CR. I don't know. I haven't been doing this long enough to know. I know what I think looks good. I dote over my kids and they aren't kept in cages, but get to go outside every day. They play in the dirt and are allowed to be chickens. Maybe they don't get as "finished" that way. I just don't know.
This is Weener, from Illini Poultry Club show. Not a real good picture of her because her crest decided to go flat.

And this is the newest winner Moe from the WI International show. She's a bit lighter than in this picture. My flash didn't go off.

No rust color on them... perhaps a touch on the crest... much lighter and the entire body is more silver than the 1308 bird. So mine might be lavender splits that look like? They have definite partridge penciling.

I guess I'll have to wait until spring to see how they will look. I was just curious if anyone had a picture of a really light grey partridge with no brown showing at all.

You mean a light grey?

I think that's what I mean. The color is very much the same as the young lavs (excuse me Self Blues) but with penciling and a darker crest. I'm really pretty ignorant about Silkie genetics/color and it shows. Thanks for bearing with me.

They are both lovely! I especially like the colouring on Moe. Her crest is not the generally preferred shape, but I have to say I actually prefer the bonnet look.

Partridge silkies are not all that common, so that could be part of it. I know my best type partridge hen does not have the dark chestnut colouring, and to me looks too washed out. Nevertheless, she has always won over better coloured birds because of her type. This year I have some very nice pullets that are good contenders to beat her. Both properly coloured AND great type.

Age makes a difference in looking finished. Care, food and daily life make a difference in being in condition.

Here are some better pictures of the girls taken a short time before the first show.

This shows them off a little better. They were much more relaxed at home.

Brody's Broodello :

I got my blue partridge girl by breeding a Lavender Rooster over a Buff Hen. Here's a picture of her.

So, what do you guys think I should breed her to, a Lavender Rooster for Isabel or a Partridge Rooster?

Well, I take it, since you are on the partridge thread that you would want to go partridge. I CERTAINLY AM NOT THE GURU OF GENETICS. THIS IS JUST A WILD GUESS (!

). IN FACT I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THEM!! lol. I would go with a partridge, or try to find a blue partridge cokerel that carries the lav gene. You then breed the best boy back to mom & the sisters to dad. It may take you a couple of generations or more. Yep, another pen or 2 or 3. She certainly is a pretty thing tho.

You need to talk to Sonoran on this one...
