Partridge Silkies - Nothing else

Pics
Cetawin I am so sorry about your losses...where are you in Kentucky and are u coming to the Ohio Nationals because my son and I would like to give your daughter some new chickens...I have some beautiful black LF Ameraucanas who would just be at point of lay by then and all kinds of wonderful silkies of just about every color and so far my LF seem to be handling this awful heat....I know how devastated my son gets when he loses a favorite bird...he lost his first silkie roo this year the bird was in his teens but my son was still upset over it all....let me know if you would like any and I can send some photos of some and she can pick them out....I also have a bunch of little Nankins who are heat hardy....I invested in some shop pedestal fans and the volume of air they blow out in comparison to the house fans is incredible and I believe this is the only reason the birds have survived...that and all my coops are heavily insulated so they do stay cooler longer...all my young birds are raised in wire bottomed cages and tho more crowded they have air flowing continuously around their bodies...they lie flat down on the wire with their wings out when it is in the 100s...I feel so sad for all who have lost birds to the heat it is hard enough to get them to adulthood to just have them go to the weather...Chris

Yea Cant Wait For This Heat To Break!

Hi All,

I'm sorrry to hear of more loss on here

I am very grateful the weather broke here in CT yesterday. It was no humidity and 78 degrees was the high. But, according to the weather ppl, it's going back up to 90 for the next 4+ days after tomorrow. The only thing I've done that I think helps (I'm no expert) Is I offer my birds two or more sources of water in their runs/pens/coops. Yes it sounds like alot of work but, I've noticed that when you offer more than one waterer it helps the lower end pecking order of chicks, chickens, etc.. Also, I use poultry/livestock electrolytes in only one of the waterers and make sure they have other wateres without. A vet once told me it's great to give them the electrolytes however, the animals also need regular water too b/c too much of one thing is never a good thing. (again, I can not say with 100% certainty this is acurate) I also do the following with food and treats. Every morning I give my pens watered down feed, frozen ripe tomatos, watermelon, and any other type of high water content snacks spread out all over in shady spots. I always keep a fan blowing hot air out of the coops so that natural cool air at night enters without blowing directly on them and causing sickness.

There are alot of things one can do to help but, in the end if you have a baby that is weak they may pass no matter what you try

Best Wishes to all throughout these next 2 months.

Chikincrazee thank you so much for that sweet offer. Pleaae tell your son thank you. We will not be able to go this year. My daughter went with Wegotchickens and her family last year. It is about 3 hours from us I believe. I am about 64 miles South of Cincinnati. I have a plan for rebuilding my flock, a couple pages back I spoke of it, so I am moving forward with positive drive. But I thank you for the wonderful offer. But I must ask what is a Nankin?

It may be cute, but it doesn't sound too healthy. They can now get chilled and can then get sick. Too much going back and forth from hot to cold can't be a good thing to their little systems. Just my opinion, someone else may see it differently.
