I had a male once with that perfect mulberry color and his turned red almost overnight it seemed. I was like what!
But then I swear it went back to mulberry. Thoguht I was losing my mind or something. Could be that I am
I noticed that my black silkie roo's comb turns bright red whenever he decides to go "argue" with the caged roos or if I happen to move any new birds or cages into his yard. I see that he can go from mulberry to red almost instantly also.

Maybe that happens... I just recently put all of my teenage boys in a pasture together and it was like overnight that all of those tiny beautiful mulberrry combs EXPLODED and turned much redder (is that a word).
I don't see why this couldn't be the case. When the hormones start churning, if it can flow downwards it should make sense that it flows upwards as well. I know my Marans roos get really "redder" in the comb, face, and wattles when they are excited and looking for a fight...or romance!
